Book Review: Paper Hearts Series by Beth Revis

You know Beth Revis from her NY Times Bestselling Across the Universe YA sci-fi trilogy and many writers also know her from her years of writing advice on her blog and Wattpad which recently led to the release of her writing advice series, Paper Hearts.

Compiled and released in three volumes, Paper Hearts dives into the world of publishing from the writer’s POV and is an incredibly honest account of what to expect from (yourself and those you’re entrusting your work to on the journey in) both traditional publishing and self publishing.

The Paper Hearts series came from Beth’s desire to give back to the writing community. After years of posting articles and comments in answer to aspiring writers’ questions, Beth compiled the book in Wattpad. With more than 100000 reads in Wattpad, Beth rewrote the collection into a comprehensive book series with hundreds of pages of new content, practical advice, philosophy, charts, and more.

Paper Hearts, Volume 1: Some Writing Advice (Released November 1, 2015) is a great resource for beginning writers or writers who have been drafting for awhile but may not have direction when it comes to revising. This is a wonderful tool for writers looking to understand structure and improve their craft and don’t know where to begin. Having followed Beth’s writing advice for years, I can’t say that I learned anything new in this volume, however, I did highlight a number of entries in my e-book as reminders and inspiration and am happy to have this book as part of my collection.

Paper Hearts, Volume 2: Some Publishing Advice (Released December 1, 2015) on the other hand, I learned quite a bit from. Especially as someone who is definitely open to becoming a hybrid author, I found this volume very helpful as there were things that I’d long to know about self publishing and didn’t know up until this point.

For anyone looking to get an overview of the steps of publishing for an author after the traditional book deal or the steps for an author after they’ve written a book and they’re ready to self-pub, this is a great resource! From editing & formatting, to querying, contracts & gearing up for promo, and everything in between, Paper Hearts Volume 2 takes it up a level and is worth the investment for any aspiring published author, no matter what road you’re planning to go down. It’s the perfect jumping off point to the research that you’ll be doing as you navigate through your publishing career.

Paper Hearts, Volume 3: Some Marketing Advice (Released December 31, 2015) is an amazing resource full of information that will help any author looking to step up their marketing game when the time comes. Take notes, writers because what you read here will come in handy time and time again. Whether you need guidance in figuring out what to put on your author website, are looking into how to best market your book three months before publication leading up to launch day, or trying to navigate how best to handle events once you are an established author, this book is the perfect launching pad for all things marketing.

Not sure about social media? Starting a newsletter? Handling giveaways? Beth Revis has got you covered! I highly recommend this for authors who are self publishing, debuting traditionally, or are established authors who need some encouragement when it comes to marketing. What a great tool here. What a great writing series here. Highly recommended.

The Paper Hearts series by Beth Revis is available now in paperback and e-book formats.
