Blu-ray Review: Neighbors

Release Date: September 23, 2014
Rating: R
Running Time: 1 hour 37 minutes

By all appearances, new parents Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Rose Byrne) are living the American Dream – complete with an adorable baby girl and a beautiful new starter home in the suburbs. Still, the early-thirtysomethings want to believe they have a modicum of coolness left within them. So when they discover that their new next-door neighbors are none other than dozens of Delta Psi Beta fraternity brothers led by charismatic president Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron), they try to make the best of an awkward situation. But when the frat’s parties grow increasingly more epic, both sides of the property line begin to fend for their turf. The neighbors’ relentless sabotage escalates into outrageous one-upmanship, beginning a Greek war for the ages. Also stars Dave Franco and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Ah, Neighbors. What to say, what to say. When you think of a frat house and when you think of Seth Rogen, you know what you’re getting yourself into. Still. I wish this movie had been a little less vulgar. I’m pretty open but even I was taken aback by the unnecessary amount of cursing which was essentially every other word and the amount of sexual references which occurred basically every two seconds. It’s just so crude. So if you can get past that, this movie is really funny!

Aside from that, I think that Zac Efron did a great job showing off his comedic side. This was a great opportunity for Zac and after seeing him in this, I look forward to even more comedic roles from him. I just hope that he doesn’t get sucked into doing only comedy after this because that would be a shame. he is so versatile and can do so much.

Anyway, as a whole, the story of Neighbors is pretty straight forward and one big fun fest… there really isn’t anything more to it than that. Don’t watch this with the family if you do watch it! It’s one thing for a movie to be a bit much but this goes beyond. So. Funny. But. Beyond.

Bonus Features:

Deleted/Alternate Scenes (13 minutes) – There are ten deleted/alternate scenes and four of them made me laugh out loud. If you laughed during the movie, you’ll laugh during a few of these.

Line-O-Rama (2:45 minutes) – This feature showcases some of the improv lines from a few similar scenes and as a fan of improv, I absolutely love seeing the actors play with what they’re given and take it even further. This wasn’t hilarious or anything but it was interesting to see the cast just go for it.

An Unlikely Pair (5:30 minutes) – In this feature, the cast and crew discuss working with Zac and Seth and the dynamic between those too as Seth is known for his comedy and Zac is not.

Appearing in this Feature:
Director, Nicholas Stoller
Producer, Evan Goldberg
Cast Members, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Ike Barinholtz, Craig Roberts, Zac Efron, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Rose Byrne

Partying with the Neighbors (7 minutes) – This feature talks about the relationship between the Radners and their new frat neighbors as well as the relationship between the Radners and what that means for how they respond to not only the frat but each other. The Radners best friend couple also gets some attention as well. Basically, this feature is a little bit more than the title suggests which was a nice surprise.

Appearing in this Feature:
Producer, Evan Goldberg
Co-Writers, Brendan O’Brien, Andrew Jay Cohen
Director, Nicholas Stoller
Cast Members, Rose Byrne, Seth Rogen, Ike Barinholtz

On the Set with… (3:40 minutes) – Wow. An entire feature dedicated to the lower region. Classy.

Appearing in this Feature:
Property Master, Sean Mannon
Cast Members, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jerrod Carmichael, Seth Rogen, Dave Franco

The Frat (5:45 minutes) – This is basically an unnecessary feature as it’s another behind the scenes feature and the feature, “Partying with the Neighbors” did a very fine job executing this already. This could have been condensed and tacked on to that feature, changed the name, and called it a day.

Appearing in this Feature:
Director, Nicholas Stoller
Co-Writers, Brendan O’Brien, Andrew Jay Cohen
Cast Members, Zac Efron, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Roberts, Dave Franco, Kyle Newacheck, Anders Holm, Adam DeVine, Blake Anderson, Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Jake Johnson, Bobby Moynhan, Nathan Fielder

  1. I thought it was entertaining but my husband HATED it. I do wish that it would have been a little less crude–I'm not sure why comedy has to be in the dirtiest of gutters these days.
