Addie has always been able to see the future when faced with a choice, but that doesn’t make her present any easier. Her boyfriend used her. Her best friend betrayed her. So when Addie’s dad invites her to spend her winter break with him in the Norm world, she jumps at the chance. There she meets the handsome and achingly familiar Trevor. He’s a virtual stranger to her, so why does her heart do a funny flip every time she sees him? But after witnessing secrets that were supposed to stay hidden, Trevor quickly seems more suspicious of Addie than interested in her. She wants to change that.
Laila, her best friend, has a secret of her own: she can restore Addie’s memories . . . once she learns how. But there are powerful people who don’t want this to happen. Desperate, Laila tries to manipulate Connor, a brooding bad boy from school—but he seems to be the only boy in the Compound immune to her charms. And the only one who can help her.
In the suspenseful sequel to Pivot Point, Addie tries desperately to retrieve her lost memories and piece together a world she thought she knew before she loses the love she nearly forgot.
I’ve been anticipating the sequel to Pivot Point by Kasie West for forever it seems even though it’s only been a few months since I read the first book in the duology. My review for Pivot Point is here in case you want to read it.
So, in Split Second, we alternate between Addie and her best friend, Laila’s POVs. I was so excited to get inside Laila’s head and get to know her more. The struggles she faces at home really made Laila human. Sure, we’re following kids who are from a secret compound full of people with special abilities and the exterior is cool but the interior, the matters of the heart are just as strong here. Talk about emotionally gripping.
What we discover about Laila in this sequel is a perfect example of the backpack method (giving the reader information at exactly the moment they need it, no sooner, no later). Both Addie and Laila have broken families and decisions to make inside the home as well as out. Watching these two as daughters, siblings, best friends, and so much more to so many different people was such a treat.
Addie may be able to see both outcomes of a choice before she makes it but what is she to do with another power advancing inside of her and memories of hers from a past outcome (which she didn’t choose) that need to be restored? Laila has her own sets of issues, mainly trust and dependability issues and listening to her heart. Something we can all relate to. Every main and minor character, every relationship, every setting, everything has so much purpose and I love how wonderfully crafted and executed every element of this novel is. Kasie West should be very proud of what she’s written.
So if you’re wondering if the sequel is up to par with the first novel, West delivers. This sequel is fantastic. I don’t want to give anything away about the story because I think it’s best to go into the book without many details. Enjoy the ride. I will say that just when you think you know where the story is going, there’s a twist. So many twists fill this book, I absolutely loved it! I usually don’t try to figure out what’s going to happen next in books but I couldn’t help myself here. What a ride. We get to see more people use more abilities, see how deception works on both the good and bad sides, and so, so much more. Just like Pivot Point, Split Second has perfect pacing making this a story you’ll devour. It’s funny, it’s sad, romantic, action packed, and so much more. Take an evening off and open this sequel up because it’s one fantastic conclusion to an incredible story.
