Kings 2009

Starring: Ian McShane, Chris Egan, Sebastian Stan, Susanna Thompson, Allison Miller, Eamonn Walker, Dylan Baker, Michael Patrick Crane, Marlyne Barrett, Jason Antoon, Joel Garland

From executive producer Michael Green (NBC’s “Heroes”) comes a riveting new drama about a modern day monarchy. “Kings” is a contemporary re-telling of the timeless tale of David and Goliath. This series is an epic story of greed and power, war and romance, forbidden loves and secret alliances — and a young hero who rises to power in a modern-day kingdom.

King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane, “Deadwood”) is the well-entrenched king of Gilboa, whose flag bears a divine butterfly symbol. Gilboa has its capital in Shiloh, a clean new city that is unspoiled by time or litter. Silas must deal with the tensions rising between Gilboa and neighboring nation Gath. When several prisoners of war are taken, a young soldier, David Shepherd (Chris Egan, “Eragon”), defies orders and crosses enemy lines to save them. Unknown to David, the soldier he saves is Jack Benjamin (Sebastian Stan, “The Covenant”), the son of the king. From that day forth, David’s life will never be the same.

Better Off Ted – 2009 – 2010

Starring: Jay Harrington, Portia de Rossi, Andrea Anders, Jonathan Slavin, Malcolm Barrett

From turning co-workers into human popsicles to converting ordinary fruit into a military weapon, nothing is off limits at the company depicted in this satire. Better Off Ted gives us a bird’s-eye view into the clockworks of a soulless corporation, Veridian Dynamics. As the corporation makes technological advancements, morals and human rights are heavily neglected. Don’t drop your kids off at the Veridian daycare, unless you don’t mind them doubling as janitors!

Every episode comes with a humorous-yet-bizarre advertisement from Veridian that is based around a given topic. The show focuses on a successful good guy named Ted Crisp (Jay Harrington) who heads the research-and-development department. At the office, Ted struggles with his “one office affair” rule. You see, Ted has an office crush on Linda Zwordling (Andrea Anders), a rebellious and energetic co-worker who loves to challenge management, but already had a onetime run-in with his automaton-like boss, Veronica Palmer (Portia de Rossi). Veronica is friendless, heartless, and lets nothing stand in her way of serving Veridian’s unscrupulous needs. Veronica’s idea of fun usually involves demeaning those around her, especially the two lab nerds Phil Mymen (Jonathan Slavin) and Lem Hewitt (Malcolm Barrett)—who are the mad scientists behind every new Veridian contraption. These two geniuses have spent way too much time together and their relationship is closer to that of a married couple than co-workers.

You wouldn’t believe the insanity and daily goofs that take place at this corporate conglomerate. Why would anyone want to work there? There‘s no consideration for the employees (all budget cuts are at their expense), upper management is run by tyrants and the cafeteria food stinks. Hmmm, on second thought, maybe Veridian isn’t that farfetched after all.

Dollhouse 2009 – 2010

Starring: liza Dushku, Harry Lennix, Fran Kranz, Tahmoh Penikett, Enver Gjokaj, Dichen Lachman, Olivia Williams, Miracle Laurie, and Amy Acker

CAROLINE (Eliza Dushku) – code name “Echo” – is an “Active,” a member of a highly illegal and underground group of individuals who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Hired by the wealthy, powerful and connected, the Actives don’t just perform their hired roles, they wholly become – with mind, personality and physiology – whomever the client wants or needs them to be. Whether imprinted to be a lover, an assassin, a corporate negotiator or a best friend, the Actives know no other life than the specific engagements they are in at that time.

Ugly Betty 2006 – 2010

Starring: America Ferrera, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Ana Ortiz, Becki Newton, Michael Urie, Mark Indelicato, Vanessa Williams, Judith Light, Ashley Jensen, Christopher Gorham, Alan Dale, Rebecca Romijn, Alec Mapa, Daniel Eric Gold, Grant Bowler, Sarah Lafleur, and Adam Rodriguez

Sure, Ugly Betty is really a comedy about how beauty is only skin deep and how beautiful people can be ugly on the inside, but you know you love watching it to see all the fashionistas spewing ugly truths and insults.

The show centers around the offices of Mode fashion magazine, and Ugly Betty struts its stuff to make the catwalk catty. So even while we’re rooting for underdog Betty Suarez to speak her heart and to shine like her gleaming braces, we’re sort of waiting for her to get shot down by the sassy counterfire from her foils, Marc St. James and Amanda Tanen Sommers (Michael Urie and Becki Newton). And then there’s the power struggle between Mode muckety-mucks Wilhelmina Slater and Daniel Meade (Vanessa Williams and Eric Mabius) that adds to the cutthroat couture.

There’s nothing better than watching the Chanel and Versace fly since backstabbing, scheming and mudslinging are clearly in vogue on this show. After all, Ugly Betty is based on a Colombian telenovela. Just don’t expect any of those extreme close-up stare-downs that you’d see on a soap on the international channel. If someone on the show has something to say, they won’t say it merely with their eyes. They’ll just flat-out say it. And they’ll say it with style.

  1. I don't disagree with a lot of things on this list (Jericho, The Unusuals, and Pushing Daisies), but you definitely missed Eastwick, Wonderfalls, Carnivale, Dark Angel, My Own Worst Enemy, and Women's Murder Club, for example!

  2. Hey Andrea!

Well Eastwick was not as good as I know it could have been, so I intentionally left that show off the list…and as for Dark Angel & Carnivale, I will be making a separate list for shows that I haven't watched and plan to watch…stay tuned for that list coming soon! 🙂
