Early Review: Dark Blue – “Pilot”

The Series Premiere of Dark Blue Airs Wednesday, July 15 at 10/9c on TNT and below is my early review of the premiere!

The all-new series, DARK BLUE follows undercover police officers as they infiltrate the dark side of Los Angeles.

Violence defines the first scene in the series premiere of this dark drama. I have to admit, it totally caught me off guard. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t that so soon into the episode. Although in this episode, the undercover cops are after a gang leader, so yes, the violence makes sense. Overall there’s just too much (graphic) violence for me to really get into this show.

I do love the characters. There are so many different directions for character development so it will be interesting to see what paths each of the main characters take. First, there is Carter (Dylan McDermott) who no longer has a wife of his own to go home to at night and his life is his work, so I am thinking in the future there could be an episode or a phase where he breaks down because of spending too much time at work and not enough time enjoying life. On the other hand, there is Ty who has a new wife at home but because of this…his heart is more into his family than his work. So that brings up the question of if he wants to continue to balance both and if so, will work or family force him to choose one over the other?

Then, there is Jaimie Allen who lied about who she was to work in the police department – and now redeem herself by working with Carter who recruits her. As Carter is the only one in the force who knows she is not who she says she is, it should be interesting to see if and how the story of her past will unfold. Lastly, there is Dean…the one that everyone thinks is going to flip to the other side and that is because he is so unpredictable. Dean seems like a ticking clock, so only time will tell what comes of his story.

What will make me watch this show are these incredible characters and I know that it only gets better from here. If these characters are continuously carefully crafted and there are more compelling story lines throughout, this show has the potential to be an award winning show. I didn’t find any humor in this episode so I am hoping a joke or two is thrown in here and there to keep episodes from being too blue. Regarding the title of the show, from what I have seen it is more blue than dark and I am wondering if that is the set tone or if the tone will progress into dark blue and not just one over the other. Time will tell. One thing I can say, characters for the win!
