I finally watched the final two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. I really just didn’t want it to be over. *cries* The show ended after 5 seasons on May 30th and I’m about two seconds away from rewatching from the beginning. Don’t tempt me! But there’s a lot of new TV out this month, so let’s get to talking about it…
TV
The Clipped mini series on Hulu was absolutely fantastic. It’s about the the downfall of the racist former Los Angeles Clippers owner, Donald Sterling and the assistant who took him down. I remember when TMZ published the audio of his racist remarks but seeing the whole picture here in this mini drama was quite something. WOW. I’ve also enjoyed The Acolyte, which, while not my favorite Star Wars show, is a solid addition to the universe. That finale was something else!
I also watched Fallout on Amazon Prime. I am not a gamer so I have no idea how the gamers enjoyed this adaptation but I loved it! It’s already been renewed for a second season and you can bet, I will be watching. Orphan Black: Echoes started and I’m having a hard time believing that Kira would be involved and in the position that she is in after everything her mom went through so they are going to really have to earn that as the season goes on.
Supacell on Netflix is a Black British superhero series that has 6 episodes in its first season. It’s absolutely fantastic. If you liked how Misfits focused on ordinary people with powers and everyday stakes, you’ll like this. Though this is not a YA show, so don’t get it twisted. The only comparison to Misfits is what I just mentioned and the fact that both shows are set in London. I do love that by exploring ordinary people, on top of that is the layer of following Black people. So we explore hyper surveillance, being taken advantage of in a hospital setting, and more. One of the supporting characters has sickle cell, a disease that disproportionally affects the Black community. It feels so good to see our stories being told, especially in modern day sci-fi/fantasy storytelling. I love it.
As for docu-series, I watched Cult Massacre: One Day In Jonestown on Hulu which was a solid docu-series if you don’t already know about Jonestown. I don’t think there’s much anything new to it if you’re very familiar with it but it is a solid watch.
Dark Matter on Apple TV was absolutely fantastic. If you love sci-fi, specifically alternative realities, watch this ASAP. I haven’t had that much fun watching TV in awhile. Apple TV is really knocking it out of the park with their sci-fi.
The Big Door Prize was cancelled on Apple TV and it’s a shame cause that was such a fun show. I’ll be sure to add the book that it’s based on, on my TBR list.
Movies
Note: Be sure to follow me on Letterboxd!
My favorites this month include The Great Lillian Hall on HBO which stars the legendary, Jessica Lange. She is absolutely brilliant. Also the german film, I’m Your Man which was a solid sci-fi following a study on robots designed to be an individual’s life partner replacing humans as companions.
As for documentaries, I hit a home run this month. I highly recommend watching Jim Henson Idea Man (Disney+), Butterfly in the Sky (Netflix), and Power of the Dream (Amazon). But I Am: Celine Dion takes the cake and even if you aren’t typically a crier, grab the tissues anyway. As a creative, it’s one of the most meaningful and hard hitting documentaries I’ve seen. Also, trigger warning, the documentary does show Celine having a seizure.
Books
I can’t say that this month was a big reading month. Less than a handful in June and I can’t say anything in particular stood out. I’m not really one to lean into “reading slumps” as I believe reading breaks are fine. So, we’ll see how long this break lasts!
What did you watch or read and enjoy in June?
