April 2024 Monthly Wrap Up

I don’t have an intro this month, I consumed so much in April, so let’s just get right to it…

Queen Latifah stars in THE EQUALIZER on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+

TV

Quantum Leap was cancelled. I am really bummed about that, it was such a great show and it could have gone for so many more seasons. As for a show that was cancelled with time to wrap things up… I have been LOVING Star Trek: Discovery. I am going to be so sad when the show is over and I’m just trying to mentally prepare myself for the end. The Equalizer was renewed which I am very excited about. I love following Robyn, Dante, Harry, Mel, Delilah, and Aunt Vi each week. Also, I wrote a series review of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live over on Reactor which I’m very proud of, so please be sure to check that out if you’re a TWD fan.

Movies

Note: Be sure to follow me on Letterboxd!

This was a great month of movies for me. At least that’s what I’m going to continue to tell myself since I am unemployed and cannot go to the movie theaters like I want to. So what did I watch at home? Code 8 Part 2, the sequel to Stephen & Robbie Amell’s Netflix movie, Code 8. It was a much better sequel than I anticipated, that’s for sure. But I’ll move on quickly from that since Stephen Amell is a scab. I also watched Halle Berry’s Bruised, which was also her feature directorial debut. If you’ve had that in your queue for awhile, I highly suggest moving it up your watch list. What a debut she made. Beautiful. I also watched movies like Face/Off, Waterworld, Outbreak, Thelma & Louise, and Only Yesterday for the first time. My heart was finally ready to sit down and watch the documentary, Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am, which was 5 stars and if I could give it more stars, I would. I rather enjoyed Elle Fanning’s Mary Shelley which people either like or don’t like. But it’s not a documentary, it’s a creative work of fiction based on real life, heavy on the creative. So I enjoyed it. It also must be said that I don’t think Hollywood realizes the absolute gem that they have in Bel Powley. I can’t wait to see her win all of the awards one day. I finally got around to Uncut Gems. Also watched Not Okay starring Zoey Deutch and I truly don’t know why more people aren’t talking about that movie and didn’t when it came out two years ago.  Yeah, April was pretty good.

Books

April was a great reading month for me. I read 9 graphic novels (finally finished GIANT DAYS), 5 novels in verse, 2 memoirs, and more…coming to 29 books read in April. My favorites? THIS IS THE HONEY by Kwame Alexander which is a collection of poetry from almost every contemporary Black poet you could think of, AMERICAN MURDERER by Gail Jarrow which is a nonfiction historical account of hookworm, as well as the contemporary novels in verse, ALL THE FIGHTING PARTS by Hannah V. Sawyerr (content warning for sexual assault), WHEN WE MAKE IT by Elisabet Velasquez, and the middle grade verse novel, OTHER WORDS FOR HOME by Jasmine Warga. Oh wait, I have to mention (also in-verse) ARIEL CRASHES A TRAIN by Olivia A. Cole which I adored. It’s been a delightful mix of reading new releases as well as older releases and that, to me is always the most fun. Hopefully I can do it all over again in May because I think I’m on a roll!

What did you watch or read and enjoy this month?
