March 2024 Monthly Wrap Up

March was quite a packed month for me when it comes to movies. I was really racking up the views, that’s for sure! More on that below. As for TV? Not so much but the Oscars (yay Da’Vine Joy Randolph!!!) and NAACP Image Awards were also in March and with that, award season is over. This was probably the most fun award season in awhile. It felt like for the most part, the awards went to who I wanted them to go (my first or second choices) and it was just overall a pleasant experience (less punching down jokes from the hosts and more clever roasting or just altogether skipping the roasting for different material). Award shows aside, I really want to talk about my favorite show that I discovered this month so let’s get to it…

TV

When it comes to shows that returned in March, there aren’t even a handful that I do watch. They include 9-1-1, Grey’s Anatomy, Girls5eva, and Invincible. I’ve started all of them except for Grey’s as I’m half a season behind on Grey’s. I’ll get to it when I get to it. The other shows had solid returns.

As for new series, I started watching Manhunt (Apple) but I’m not in the mood for that right now so I’ll pick that back up at a later date but the first episode was solid. I watched Apples Never Fall (Peacock) and enjoyed everything up until the ending which was not at all satisfying. I need to find out if the book has the same ending or a more satisfying one. While I try to read books prior to watching screen adaptations, I didn’t get around to this book in time and just dove into the show. If the ending is different, I would definitely still like to read to the book. Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV is a must see docu-series but it is triggering and disturbing, so FYI.

I stumbled upon The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy (Amazon Prime) which premiered in February. It’s an animated sci-fi comedy all about anxiety and I’ve watched the entire first season multiple times already. I think it’s safe to say that it’s in my top 5, possibly top 3 new series of 2024. It’s definitely going to be my comfort watch show for the indefinite future. I can name on one hand the shows that I rewatch and I haven’t rewatched those shows in years because I rewatched them at nauseam, know them by heart, and just replay them in my mind when I want. I’m probably going to know season one of this show by heart before season two even releases, I am that in love with this show. I could write a thesis on what this show means to me but I’ll probably just write a spec script for it that will live on my computer for only me to see instead. Just know that I adore this show with all of my heart and I hope it goes on for many, many seasons.

I have yet to get to 3 Body Problem and X-Men ’97 because I need to read the book for the former (it’s been on my to read list forever, oh my goodness, that’s my bad) and I need to finish my rewatch of the original animated X-Men series before starting the new one.

Movies

Of the movies that actually released this month, I’ve only seen Damsel and Lindsay Lohan’s Irish Wish (both on Netflix). I still have Dune Part 2, Love Lies Bleeding, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, & Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on my watch list.

As far as movies that I watched for the first time in March but are not necessarily March 2024 releases… there are a handful worth mentioning. Horns was something else. I really love the movies that Daniel Radcliffe chooses. They always have such a funky premise, I love it. I also enjoyed the Mean Girls musical movie, which got way too much hate, Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, which is probably one of my favorites of Sofia’s, Poor Things, which was absolutely fantastic and is also not for everyone–especially those who are sexually repressed, American Fiction, The Incredible Shrinking Man, Panic in Year Zero!, Your Name., which was so beautiful, One Cut of the Dead, such a clever zombie movie, Anatomy of a Fall, and umm I finally got around to watching the classic, Donnie Darko. Definitely one of my all time favorites. No idea why I held off on watching that movie. So glad it’s in my brain now. Truly feels like it was always there, which is comforting. My favorite movies this month also include Zone of Interest which is a must see and Nicolas Cage’s Dream Scenario which was just so unhinged and I loved every moment of it. So I’d say I had a great movie month!

Books

I’m reading and enjoying multiple books at the moment and I checked out a handful of graphic novels from the library that I look forward to reading soon. I’m also really enjoying DJ MacHale’s short story collection, Beyond Midnight. The collection has seven short stories including one with vampires which I’m pointing out because it’s definitely a favorite of mine. This collection is adult which is a quick detour from his middle grade works that I absolutely love even at my big age where I am not the audience haha but I’ve been reading his books since I was a kid and I will never stop. Hopefully next month, I’ll have finished the many books that I’m in the middle of so I can talk about how much I loved them. Only time will tell!

What did you watch or read and enjoy in March?
