It’s time for another YA Treats, a feature in which I mash up diverse young adult (YA) books and healthy, vegan treats. You can follow my instagram (@melliesimps or @yatreats) or the tags, #YATreats and #TheYAVegan to keep track of this feature. Book recommendations are welcome; keep in mind recs must be of diverse YA titles (fiction or nonfiction).
Today, I present to you…
Allegedly Oats
My next read is slated to be the young adult contemporary novel, Allegedly by debut author, Tiffany D. Jackson (Add it to Goodreads). Allegedly released on January 24, 2017 from Katherine Tegen Books. This book has been on my radar since the book deal was announced and I’ve heard nothing but good things before and after its release so I am excited to finally get to this title!
Book Synopsis
Mary B. Addison killed a baby.
Allegedly. She didn’t say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: A white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it? She wouldn’t say.
Mary survived six years in baby jail before being dumped in a group home. The house isn’t really “home”—no place where you fear for your life can be considered a home. Home is Ted, who she meets on assignment at a nursing home.
There wasn’t a point to setting the record straight before, but now she’s got Ted—and their unborn child—to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary must find the voice to fight her past. And her fate lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But who really knows the real Mary?

The Treat
Pinterest led me to a delicious peanut butter overnight oats recipe over at the blog, The Minimalist Baker. I mixed half a cup of almond milk, 3/4 TBS of chia seeds, 2 TBS peanut butter, and 1 TBS of maple syrup in a bowl, then added the 1/2 cup of rolled oats, and mixed it again, covered the bowl in foil and put it in the fridge overnight. You can put it straight in a regular sized mason jar but I just followed The Minimalist Baker instructions here just because. In the morning, I put more chia seeds in the bottom of the mason jar, poured the oats in the jar, and I topped it off with one banana, a few strawberries, a light sprinkle of chia seeds, and coconut shreds.
So, that’s it! If you decide to make this treat and/or read this book, be sure to let me know what you think!
