An all new episode of Face Off: All Stars airs tonight on Syfy! You know what that means. Here’s a recap of last week’s episode which left us hanging on the elimination.
We last left off with the artists getting another hour of last looks in which the teams could revise their makeups, inspired by the judges’ critique. Gage and Rachael had some decent changes but it wasn’t enough for the judges and almost right away, we discover that this is the team that was eliminated. I actually thought their changes were better than the changes made by Keaghlan and Melissa but what do I know? Gage & Rachael will be missed.
With the elimination over, it was time for the next challenge. Host, McKenzie Westmore met the artists in the lab to deliver the next Spotlight Challenge… they had to choose a trade and use the raw materials based on the trade as inspiration to create a puppet or marionette character. Keaghlan and Melissa chose Blacksmith, Tyler and Emily picked Tailor, Adam & Logan chose Stonemason, Ben and Evan picked Goldsmith, & finally, Cig and George were left with Tanner. Once again, the challenge was a two-day challenge instead of a three-day challenge. If the challenges for the rest of the season, at least leading up to the final challenge, are all two days, I won’t even be mad. This is All Stars, after all.
In the lab, Logan was worried about this challenge, having been eliminated on a puppet challenge in his season. Meanwhile, Ben and Evan were struggling with their concept. Series mentor, Michael Westmore joined the artists in the lab as usual with priceless notes for the artists. On day two, Cig and George discovered a rip in their foam piece. Luckily, they were able to patch it up and rolled with the punches quite smoothly. Many other teams came up against road blocks but tried their very best to resolve these issues, and with ease in remaining positive might I add. Although I was concerned about Keaghlan and Melissa who had an artistic difference that didn’t quite seem to resolve as they kept painting over each other’s work while the other was away. Confrontation is not easy, even for All Stars. Thankfully, their differences didn’t completely destroy their final product which was great.
On the reveal stage, judges, Ve Neill, Neville Page, and Glenn Hetrick were joined by Award Winning Producer, Suzanne Todd (Alice in Wonderland, Memento). I loved Cig and George’s clown creation. Loved. Ben and Evan’s ballerina was lovely but the edges were bad. Logan & Adam’s was a sailor, with classic oversized arms…fun for them but something about it didn’t quite click though for this challenge. Keaghlan and Melissa’s blacksmith assistant was solid. Fun. Tyler and Emily also made a ballerina and while I liked the idea of the other ballerina more, the execution of this ballerina was so, so much better. As Ve put it, Tyler and Emily’s creation was exquisite. As Suzanne added, it was sublime. I think this is definitely one of the best creations of the season hands down. If not the best so far this season. And I feel like with the work we’ve seen, it’s safe to say that Tyler and Emily (who won immunity twice in a row) could very well be in the finals (and win). I could totally see them going up against Cig and George in the finale. Thoughts?
The top looks that the judges decided on were Melissa & Keaghlan, George & Cig, and Emily & Tyler with Tyler and Emily obviously taking the big win. It was no question. The bottom looks were Logan & Adam and Ben & Evan so they better get whipped into shape for the next challenge or it’s goodbye for one of these teams.
