So what’s releasing this month that I’m excited about? As far as movie theater releases go, I’m highly anticipating The Shack, Before I Fall, Logan, Kong: Skull Island, and Power Rangers.
As a Christian, I’m very much looking forward to The Shack. Before I Fall is the movie adaptation of the novel of the same title written by my favorite YA author, Lauren Oliver and I’ve heard nothing but good things about the adaptation so I am very excited to see this. X-Men is one of my favorites when it comes to comic book stories so I am definitely up to see Logan. But if we’re talking about being in a fandom, I wish I could go back in time and tell my younger self that a Power Rangers movie will one day indeed come to the big screen…and even though it may not be exactly what I hope, it will b awesome. Or maybe I should wait to see that to put that hope out there? But I am so psyched to see this movie. And then there’s Kong: Skull Island. I don’t know what it is about King Kong movies but I am always there for it!
In Blu-ray/DVD releases, Moana is finally going to be available to own! Woo! Who else is counting down the days?! I didn’t get to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in theaters so I’m looking forward to adding this to my collection. I’m really excited to be able to soon see Miss Sloane and A Monster Calls, the latter of which got very little promotion which is a shame, so I hope it finds new life when it becomes more widely available to audiences.
On the TV side, the first seasons of Insecure: and Master of None: both release on blu-ray/DVD this month and that’s all that matters on the TV release front as far as I’m concerned. Lots of shows are coming back from winter hiatus to make their mid-season premieres this month, which is exciting. Even more exciting, the new shows we’ll get to check out like Making History on Fox – stay tuned for my review! The show is great and not to be missed if you’re looking for something silly to take your mind off of the messiness of the world right now.
As for books… there are many great books coming out this month but I only want to highlight three. Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry is a middle grade novel in verse that follows a girl with Tourette syndrome as she starts a new school. It is absolutely beautiful! I read an early draft of the book two years ago as a literary intern and I cannot wait to own and read the finished copy. This is a definite must read. Then, there’s Bad Blood by Demitria Lunetta, which I have been eagerly awaiting ever since I finished reading Lunetta’s duology, In the After and In the End. She blew me away with the duology! If there’s any author whose work I’ve read before, loved, and I’ve been looking forward to reading more from them – and I know that I will indeed get the chance to read more from them this year, Lunetta is the author whose words I’m most looking forward to reading. Finally, theres’s How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life by Lilly Singh, better known as IISuperwomanII on YouTube. I’ve been following her YouTube journey for many years and have been hoping that she would release a book, since, after all, of all of the YouTubers who have released books in the past handful of years, not many of them have actually written the books themselves. She is a comedian. She is a writer. So I know that she legit wrote this book, legit put her heart and soul into this work. So I am very, very, very much excited to read this and proud of all of her success thus far. Go, Lilly!
