TV Talk – Face Off: All Stars Episode 11.05 Recap & Review “Troubling Transformations”

An all new episode of Face Off: All Stars airs tonight on Syfy! So as usual, here’s a recap of last week!

Host, McKenzie Westmore met the artists at the lab to deliver this week’s spotlight challenge, which, in McKenzie’s words… “Choose an experiment gone wrong and use it to inspire two makeups: a scientist who is in mid-transformation into a creature and a fully transformed monster.” OooOoooo!!! Ben and Evan went with Chemical Exposure. Keaghlan and Melissa chose Insect DNA Splicing. Gage and Rachael picked up Horticultural Hybridization. Cig and George chose Medical Augmentation. Logan & Adam picked Radiation Exposure. Tyler and Emily were last and got Electrical Shock. Based on the concepts and the teams’ ideas once they chose, I was most anticipating Tyler and Emily’s creations as well as Cig and George’s creations.

“I feel like I’m building my dream man.” – Emily

In the lab, Gage and Rachael were struggling and oh my goodness, can we give a round of applause to these two as a team and as individuals?! We need to, let’s break this down. Okay, so… When Rachael was observing Gage’s sculpt work, she wasn’t happy with what she was seeing and gently told Gage. With hesitation, she asked if she could take a crack at it. He said yes and then he walked away – not in an angry huff but to give Rachael a moment to do her thing and to give himself a moment to get some air and space so that he could see what she was trying to tell him. He said, “So I take a minute, give my eyes a rest, and I just need to breathe and think about what she’s saying because Rachael may very well be right, I just am not seeing it.” Creatives! It is SO important to step away from your work. Sometimes, when we are too close to a project, we have our blinders on and are unable to see what doesn’t work. Gage was smart enough and humble enough to take that step back and allow himself to surrender and let the collaboration really take ahold of the wheel. No matter how their creations turned out, these two just became one of my favorite teams of the season because of the way they handled this situation.

On the reveal stage, the legendary writer, producer, and writer, John Landis (Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”)  joined Ve Neill, Neville Page, and Glenn Hetrick as a guest judge. I absolutely loved Tyler and Emily’s creation as well as Cig and George’s creations. Theirs were so seamless and perfect. Logan & Adam’s was great and so clean in its execution though I agree with Landis that the Before is better and the monster’s claw is a little too big. But it’s perfect for Adam, that’s his signature so to speak so it works. I really liked Ben and Evan’s idea but the execution fell completely flat. Keaghlan and Melissa’s was solid but something about the execution of the monster didn’t click with me. I believe Ve said the makeup was muddy and that was, of course, accurate. Finally, Gage and Rachael’s creations could have flowed better but overall, it was solid and they were safe. Go, Gage & Rachael!

The top looks from the judges were Tyler & Emily and Logan & Adam with Emily & Tyler winning immunity. Obviously. They killed it this week! Keaghlan & Melissa and Ben & Evan were the bottom looks, so they have to step it up next week or one of these teams could very well be eliminated. Who made your favorite creations this week?
