Celebrity Memoir Done Right: Lauren Graham’s Talking as Fast as I Can

I love when celebrity memoirs are actually written by the celebrity. So I’d like to put the spotlight on those memoirs when the opportunity arises. Today, I want to talk about Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between by Lauren Graham.

We all know and love Lauren Graham from Gilmore Girls and boy, do we get plenty of Gilmore Girls love here as Graham takes us on her journey of breaking into the industry and eventually landing the role that would change her life. I wasn’t expecting to hear about how Graham broke in, I wasn’t expecting audition stories and all that she was willing to share about making her way in Hollywood and working as a woman in Hollywood. But it’s here and I am so glad that it is, that we get to see the foundation.

One of my favorite parts about the memoir, once the Gilmore Girls era begins, is hearing Graham reflect on the show not just overall but season by season. That was pretty special, indeed. And then to have her keep a diary during the filming of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life and share snippets of it…oh, man. Talk about being an emotional wreck. If you are a diehard Gilmore Girls fan, this memoir will give you so much life. Just sit it right beside your Gilmore Girls DVD collection.

Now I’m just as big of a fan of Parenthood so I definitely wanted way more here but other than that, no complaints on the content in this book. Graham has such a distinct voice that I love and I can’t wait to read her first novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe to see how that translates into fiction.

As for the audiobook version of this book? Well, I kind of wish that I had read this book instead. The audiobook is a quick 4 hour listen that’s very well produced. But, as you know, Graham is very theatrical. And I kind of just wanted to take this all in quite straight. This is obviously a personal choice and makes this opinion of the audiobook a reminder of how subjective it all is. That said, I think that if I listened to the audiobook years from now, long after Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life is so fresh, I’ll feel differently. I’ll appreciate the audiobook much more. But the excitement and energy of it all is maybe, overwhelming right now? Still, the memoir is worth the read, no matter how you choose to read it. Graham has wonderful stories to share and any fan of hers and/or her work will be glad that they spent the time to read them.
