TV Review: The Last Man on Earth Season 3 Premiere (Fox)

I had very high expectations for the season three premiere of The Last Man on Earth. Also, can we take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate this being season three? That went by so fast! Congrats on season three, I am so excited for what’s ahead!

So the season opens right where it left off, with three mysterious armed intruders closing in on the gang in their Malibu beach house. As they get closer, chaos ensues. Everyone runs wild, unsure of what to do. Carol runs to free Melissa from her time out only for Melissa to grab a gun (firearms being the reason for her time out) but Carol has little time to freak out over that decision.

Meanwhile, the rest of the gang runs outside to drive away in a quick escape but the car is blocked in so they need to use the van. The only problem? Todd left the keys inside! But the intruders are getting closer, and with no easy route of escape, they must prepare to protect themselves. Phil shouting “Everybody grab a weapon!” and Gail grabbing a bottle of wine, drinking it, and smashing it to use as a shank is one of the funniest moments of the first act. Laugh out loud funny moment right there. Everyone in the house leads to the big showdown inside. And guess who is the first of the three intruders to be unmasked?

Jon Hamm! Finally, right?! Hamm makes a cameo appearance, giving everyone the Mad Men reunion we all wanted! That’s so awesome that he was such a great comedic sport and joined in on one of the funniest shows on television. The writers could have written his cameo into any episode and in any way but it was so well crafted here and I loved the reveal.

As for the other two? There’s Louis (Kenneth Choi, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), who everyone feels comfortable around and there’s Pat (Mark Boone Junior), who most everyone feels the exact opposite way about. And for good reason.

The last time we saw him, he was spending time with Phil’s brother. And we remember how that turned out. Not good. The ladies express their discomfort about Pat but Phil likes him and thinks he’s just another guy looking for redemption, so he reassures Carol and the two newbies stay. Heh. Phil will see through the worst person and say they’re fine if they share even a tiny bit of a reflection of his own redemption story. It’s really sad to see (continuously) and I hope he moves past this issue for the sake of entertainment purposes, because there are certainly other ways to have Phil cause conflict.

It doesn’t take long for Pat to freak out in front of the group. So they confront Louis when Phil and Pat are away and their concerns are validated. Pat is crazy. Crazy and dangerous. His meltdown with a gun, leads to a very, very tense third act. How does a comedy that usually doesn’t take itself too seriously, manage to make my heart race?

The Last Man On Earth season 3 premiere is one to be savored. It’s not only just as thrilling and entertaining as it promised it would be but a true standout episode. One I won’t forget for a long time. The Last Man On Earth is playful and sharp and one of the best comedies you’re not watching. So course correct and start watching!

Watch The Last Man On Earth Sundays at 9:30/8:30c on Fox.
