Advanced TV Review: ABC’s Blackish Season 3 Premiere

Blackish is back! Expectations were high given how solid the show’s premieres have been in the past, plus the way season two concluded, leaving us with plenty to anticipate. The season three premiere managed to welcome viewers into an exciting, fresh new season, while giving us soft reminders of season two story lines that the show has to address. The premiere was magical and amusing and definitely worthy of checking out live!

“That guy thought you were Marshawn Lynch, Dad!” – Jack
“Eh, it’s just a flattering form of racism, son.” – Dre

In the season 3 premiere, Dre takes the family to Walt Disney World, giving them a first-class vacation he never had as a child. I feel like you’re lying if you say you don’t want to do this, so to see Dre be able to have this come into fruition, it’s a pretty big deal.

Needless to say, the kids, Zoey, Jack, and Diane take full advantage of their newfound VIP status. The family not only enjoys the VIP status but they all get really big heads and let the entitlement reign, only for them to get a fierce reality check when their VIP status, which has a time limit (unbeknownst to them), ends. They discover that some of the most heartfelt, memorable memories are priceless, with zero status… but not before a few tantrums as it sinks in that their privilege is no longer valid. A great lesson to learn here and executed so effortlessly. I could go on about privilege and its double meaning here but that could turn this review into an essay. So. Hilarity ensues. They get checked. It’s great.

Also great was the setting of Disney World, which for once in a very long time, didn’t feel like such a blatant advertisement for ABC like it does when most ABC shows take their sitcoms there. I have a theory as to why this was the case but would rather not say. Still, it was very much appreciated. Anyway…

“You monsters are dead to me!” – Dre
“Whoa!” – Disney World Visitors
“K, maybe that was the wrong choice of words since I am your father. But I hate you.” – Dre

BLACK-ISH - "VIP" - Dre decides to take his family to Walt Disney World on the magical, first-class vacation experience he was never able to have as a kid. With the help of a VIP tour guide, Dre and the kids take full advantage of their VIP status. Meanwhile, Bow, Pops and Ruby set off on their own adventure at Walt Disney World, on the season three premiere of "black-ish," WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 (9:31-10:00 p.m. EDT), on the ABC Television Network. Meanwhile, Pops, Ruby, and a pregnant Bow (don’t tell me you forgot!) are enjoying Disney World in their own adult way. At first, it’s quite boring for them since they don’t quite know how to embrace what they can on the trip. But soon enough, they find their groove. Bow, pregnant and unable to kick it with the kids is disappointed at first in this turn of events, but she ends up having a really great time with the crazy in-laws anyway. Aww.

I can’t decide which I enjoyed seeing more, the adults actually enjoying each other’s company in the present day or getting a few flashbacks from Dre’s 1983 vacation to Disney World as well as Pops and Ruby preparing for said vacation. I use the term “preparing for” very loosely here and you’ll see why when you watch.

Finally, I wonder how many show are going to work in a Pokemon Go reference. Hopefully, not too many. Anyway, what a great premiere for Blackish! Be sure to watch tonight!

Watch Blackish Wednesdays at 9:30/8:30c only on ABC.
