Blu-ray Review: Mr. Right

Release Date: June 7, 2016
Rating: R
Running Time: 1 hour 36 minutes

Recovering from a recent breakup, a heartbroken woman meets the man of her dreams, with one fatal flaw, in Mr. Right, a hilarious hit-man comedy from writer Max Landis (Chronicle) and director Paco Cabezas (Rage).  Starring Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect  1 and 2, Up in the Air) and Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, The Green Mile ) as the outlandish mismatched couple, Mr. Right gives whole new meaning to the term killer comedy.

The road to true love is paved with knives and bullets. Unlucky in love and with terrible taste in men, Martha (Kendrick) bumps into Francis (Rockwell) and finally meets the man of her dreams. Sweet and charming, he seems the perfect match until Martha discovers Francis is a world-class assassin whose enemies are trying to kill him. As the body count rises, she can’t quite decide whether to join in the mayhem or dump him. Also starring Tim Roth, Anson Mount, and the Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, Mr. Right fires up excitement and laughs!

Releasing on blu-ray and DVD just in time for summer, Mr. Right is the perfect hit-man rom-com to watch on any lazy or vacation day. It’s pure fun. In it, we follow a hit-man who kills the people who hire him (“the real bad guys”) rather than their targets. On his journey, he meets a girl. A quirky romance and comedy ensues.

This is most definitely as standard a plot as you think it is and not as compelling as it aims to be in balancing the action, comedy, and romance but because of Anna Kendrick’s comedic talents and charm and Sam Rockwell being well, Sam Rockwell, this is actually watchable and still quite entertaining! Best of all, Anna Kendrick gets to kick some butt because she’s not playing a character who needs a guy to save her. They’re a team but not only that, they’re equal and wow, isn’t that refreshing!

Plainly put, if you liked Katherine Heigl and Ashton Kutcher’s Killers or Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg’s American Ultra, you’ll enjoy this.

Bonus Feature:
* A Sweet Couple (1 minute) – In the only feature on the blu-ray (which is very disappointing – not even a gag reel for a movie that is indeed a comedy), Anna Kendrick talks about her character who is “not your typical damsel” and her love interest which together makes this “a rom com where the couple starts killing people.” It’s only a minute long and probably soundbites you’ve heard or read in any promo for the movie so this is a skip.
