Advanced TV Review: 12 Monkeys Episodes 2.07 “Meltdown” & 2.08 “Lullaby”

An all new episode of 12 Monkeys airs tonight and its solid but just you wait to see what all of the first half of this season has been gearing up towards. There will be loads of fun but there will also be tears.

Episode 2.07 “Meltdown”

Airs Tonight at 9/8c on Syfy

We begin “Meltdown” in 1959 as the past makes its way to 2016 and 2044 and The Witness causes even more chaos. Oh, the destruction in this episode. Oh, my. For so long this season, Cassandra has been such a BAMF and has had control over her strength, her mind, her willpower, her everything. To see much of that stripped away because of The Witness and to see the fallout because of it. Oy.

I also love how this episode explores what we would do for our lovers, our children, our friends when the stakes are high and the clock is ticking and how the life and death of one of our own in one time can will affect those in time, our own or otherwise.

All of this said, I can’t say that this was one of my favorite episodes of the season. It might actually be my least favorite. Story wise, there wasn’t much development. But I loved how this episode showed such contrasts and different dynamics among characters. And if there’s one development worth mentioning, it’s of course the ending which I won’t spoil.

We lose some people in this episode and then we literally lose one in time, only this time is different though you’ll have to tune in to find out why. I do love the doors that are opening because of this and I am very curious to see what this person becomes in the future especially given how time has affected someone close to them. Anything can happen.

Finally, there was no Jennifer in this episode. Understandably so given the setting and storyline for this episode but still, a bummer indeed.

Episode 2.08 “Lullaby”

Airs June 6, 2016 at 9/8c on Syfy

“Lullaby” more than makes up for the previous episode. It opens in 2020 with a KILLER opening and continues with a Groundhog Day vibe all throughout. If the previous episode focused on Cassandra, this one focuses on Katarina and yes, you will need some Kleenex because tears will fall. Still, this storyline involves Cassandra.

Cassandra has a mission revolving around Katarina. She’s hellbent on completing that mission. But it’s Cole who helps her walk outside of the box and figure out a way to successfully achieve what she really needs to achieve. I love that. The exploration of us being given direction from someone we trust only to be shown by another person more on our level that what the person with authority told us is not the problem or solution but actually a piece of the resolution. And so where do we go from there when we can start again?

Where they go is incredible. Talk about a reveal! Whoa! I had always hoped it (you’ll see what it is when you watch) were possible for Katarina so to see it come to life in such a fascinating way that I would have never predicted is so wonderful. Boy oh boy, with the previous week’s reveal and this week’s reveal, I’d like to think that 2044 is about to get a lot more allies. I’d also like the drama, the stakes to always keep rising so maybe not all allies. Anyway…

We do get Jennifer in this episode. Yes!!! She a such a scene stealer, that one! She hints at the hyenas and that’s truly all there is to say about that. I’m dying to know when that is going to come into play and wonder if it ties into the two latest revelations. Hmmm!!!

I have a theory but feel it’s too easy, too obvious a way to go so I’m looking forward to just sitting back and letting the writers take me on a wild ride for the second half of the season. The previous episode may not have been as amazing to me as the previous six but this episode… stellar. One of my absolute favorites of the series. So make sure you don’t miss this one live!
