The leading mercenary for the British East India Company, Will Reynolds, was double-crossed and now is on the run in the American colonies. To redeem his name and win back the woman he loves, Will hides behind a new mask, this time hoping to thwart his former employer. As his past life closes in on him, Will must gain the trust and help of his beloved Charlotte—and Ben Franklin!—as he races time to defuse a plot of historical proportions. BEYOND THE MASK is a revolutionary new family film bringing history to life in a faith-filled adventure that celebrates grace, liberty and the true freedom only in Christ.
From the cousin filmmaking team—Director Chad Burns and Producer Aaron Burns—BEYOND THE MASK was co-written by Stephen Kendrick (COURAGEOUS, FIREPROOF) and Paul McCusker (Adventures in Odyssey).
BEYOND THE MASK stars Andrew Cheney (SEASONS OF GRAY), Kara Killmer (Chicago Fire) and John Rhys-Davies (RETURN TO THE HIDING PLACE, THE LORD OF THE RINGS).
Well I can cross that off my movie watch list! Until now, I had never before seen a historical faith based film. Even though I’m not a huge fan of period movies, I was so intrigued by this movie that I had to watch.
After watching, I can say that is certainly delivers on all fronts. It’s a faith based film but is not message heavy at all. It’s set in 1775 and the time period feels authentic. Great job on the set design and costume department. There was a ton of action in this film too. In fact, if I had to choose a genre, I’d go with action-adventure first. There’s quite a number of grand special effects all throughout the film and I must say, I was very impressed with the film all around.
As for the story, it’s a fun story following a man who thinks he can earn grace when we know that it’s already been given to us. It’s about doing better because we want to not because we feel obligated to. With that, I enjoyed following the main characters who gave us some very emotional moments and the minor characters who delivered the former as well as some pretty humorous moments. Together and through the main love story, we learn lessons on truth and redemption. On power and surrendering….
We discover what we can do when we’re willing to grow into better people and that when we decide to do this, challenges will come in our way. It won’t be easier, it will be harder but it will be worth it. A great message to convey, I think. So if you’re into historical pieces, action adventures, and/or faith based films, pop the popcorn and check this out when you can.
