Advanced TV Review: The Path Season One on Hulu

Before I knew what the new Hulu original drama, The Path was even about, I was already on board. Anyone who knows the work of Executive Producer, Jason Katims (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights) knows they’re in for a phenomenal story. This did not disappoint.

The Path follows a family at the center of a controversial cult as they struggle with relationships, faith and power. Each episode takes an in-depth look at the gravitational pull of belief and what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want.

The Path stars Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan and Hugh Dancy as well as Kyle Allen, Emma Greenwell (Shameless), Rockmond Dunbar (The Mentalist, The Game, Sons of Anarchy), Sarah Jones (Alcatraz, Sons of Anarchy, Big Love), and Amy Forsyth (Defiance).

Created by Jessica Goldberg, the show is executive produced by Jason Katims and Michelle Lee of True Jack Productions.

Putting your trust in other people is dangerous. That’s what you’ll learn watching The Path.

If you like psychological thrillers, you need to watch this show. The Path is a fascinating story about truth and doubts and seeing what we’ve been programmed to believe, seeing all except for what we’ve programmed ourselves to deny. We discover what happens when we play on each other’s weaknesses, when we take control of situations bigger than ourselves, when we both demand power and surrender to someone else’s and don’t even realize it. The Path is intriguing from the very first moment and heart pounding once the foundation has been set.

Every episode is even more breathtaking than the next though one standout, without spoiling anything… *%#! hits the fan in episode seven! Just you wait. Enough said here…

Now one of the elements of the cult that comes about earlier in the first season that I found quite fascinating was the Infidelity Rehab Program aka IRP… because when you think about it, this has the same letters as RIP. Going into this program definitely means the death of something but whether or not that will bring peace is yet to be determined. Guess you’ll have to watch to find out who goes in and what happens when they come out. Also, while we’re on the topic of sex, now’s a good time to note that The Path is for mature audiences only.

So who’s in this show? Well, the cast of The Path is pretty phenomenal. Aaron Paul carries the weight of his character on his shoulders and delivers a mesmerizing performance. Michelle Monaghan is highly under-appreciated and is fantastic in this role playing Sarah, the wife to Eddie (Paul). Even more, her eyes are electrifying and she says so much without saying anything at all. I love that through her we see what damaged people are capable of causing when they let their suspicious take flight, their denial soar, and anger reign. Hugh Dancy is chilling as Cal, the cult leader of this particular region of “the movement” and let’s just say, this isn’t one of his romantic comedies. He will give you the creeps and for good reason. One of my favorite moments of the show comes when we get to see a bit of Cal’s backstory. Whoa. Talk about tension. Later on in the season, we get to see what happens when Cal is challenged by the people both above and below him and that leads to quite the showdown!

I love that the characters cover such a wide landscape of storytelling from Eddie who has serious doubts about “the movement” once he sees a vision from his brother, his adorable teenage son, Hawk who finds himself on the fence as well after he befriends a girl at school to a drug addict and new recruit, Emma who is brought to the cult after being taken in when a tornado levels her neighborhood, Alison, a defector and Eddie’s wife, Sarah who is 100% committed to “the movement.” And so many more. We essentially explore all sides of the story, so many different perspectives no matter how high up “The Ladder” they are, if they’ve even made the decision to take that step or jump off. The writers are so smart and have crafted so well such powerful, compelling characters, major and minor.

In all of these perspectives we see what it’s like to be deceived and brought under the cloak of false safety, in many cases after trauma. And no matter their devotion to “the movement,” we see what it’s like when people have the patience to make the right moves and ask the right questions at the right time. Who can you trust? Do you have the strength to think for yourself? Etc. etc…. Every character has purpose, every character is manipulating or being manipulated in more ways than you’d initially think and every character’s story that we see this season is worth the time the writers invested in telling them.

“When you have a murderous cult doing more good than they are, then you know we’ve got problems.” – Abe

It great getting to follow Abe (Rockmond Dunbar) at work and at home, Abe an FBI investigator who goes undercover in the cult to prove his suspicions, even though the rest of the FBI is nowhere near as concerned as he is. Now if you’re tuning in because you heard that Minka Kelly (Friday Night Lights) guest stars… you’ll love episodes 2-4 and by then, you’ll be hooked. Some other familiar faces include Paul James (Greek) and Max Ehrich (Under the Dome) among others. The cast really is spectacular. And more diverse than I expected which isn’t saying a whole lot since it isn’t terribly diverse but there is enough mixture to notice the effort. Also worth pointing out, the fantastic wardrobe, set design and music. Job well done. This is all around a wonderfully executed show.

Now at the end of ten episodes, you’ll probably be fluent in Meyerism lingo whether you want to be or not so you’ll have to decide if you want to be a part of “The Future” or “The Light.” Kidding. Anyway, bravo cast and crew on this incredible show. It’s paced brilliantly and is so rich in all of its layers. And oh my goodness, just wait until you reach the finale. What is real, my friend, what is real?

I couldn’t get enough of this show, I devoured the first season screeners in two days. The Path is dynamic with its characters, sharp in its storytelling, and bold as it explores what it means to have faith in the unknown and be taken advantage of when you do. As soon as this premieres, make it a point to watch because The Path is a must watch.

The first two episodes of the ten episode first season will be available tomorrow, a new episode releasing weekly on Hulu following premiere week.
