Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of reading a handful of nonfiction works from Zest Books. The first was the 2012 release, Dear Teen Me: Authors Write Letters to Their Teen Selves edited by Miranda Kenneally and E. Kristin Anderson (Add it to Goodreads), a beautiful compilation of letters that I highly recommend anyone read, writer or not, no matter your age. My full review is here.
ISBN-13: 978-1-936976-20-1
That same year, I had the opportunity to read the young adult memoir, Blogging for Regine by Regine Stokke (Add it to Goodreads) which is an incredibly raw and moving compilation of Regine’s blog posts as she journeyed through leukemia. It’s quite an in depth look at the everyday life of a teenager living with cancer so this might be a trigger warning for some. I talk more about this book here.
ISBN: 978-1-936976-36-2
In 2013, I had some fun reading Super Pop! Pop Culture Top Ten Lists to Help You Win with Trivia, Survive the Wild, and Make It Through the Holidays by Daniel Harmon (Add it to Goodreads) which is the ultimate for any fan of TV, film, and pop culture. I had a blast writing my review here, even making a fun top ten fae list!
ISBN: 978-1-936976-58-4
Most recently, I read The Green Teen Cook Book: Recipes for All Seasons (Add it to Goodreads) which was written by Teens, for Teens. I recommend this for teens, beginners in the kitchen, and those looking to find healthier ways to eat. More on this book can be read here.
More Titles From Zest Books To Check Out:
1. Plotted: A Literary Atlas by Andrew DeGraff & Daniel Harmon
This incredibly wide-ranging collection of maps—all inspired by literary classics—offers readers a new way of looking at their favorite fictional worlds. Andrew DeGraff’s stunningly detailed artwork takes readers deep into the landscapes from The Odyssey, Hamlet, Pride and Prejudice, Invisible Man, A Wrinkle in Time, Watership Down, A Christmas Carol, and more. Sure to reignite a love for old favorites and spark fresh interest in more recent works as well, Plotted provides a unique new way of appreciating the lands of the human imagination.
Released October 20, 2015
2. Votes of Confidence A Young Person’s Guide to American Elections by Jeff Fleischer
Every four years, coverage of the presidential election turns more into a horse-race story about who’s leading the polls and who said what when. Younger readers, who might be old enough to remember only one or two other elections, aren’t provided with much information about how the election process actually works, why it matters, or how they can become involved. With civics education becoming less common in schools, it’s important for teens to know what’s going on. With the 2016 election promising to be an interesting and hotly contested one, Votes of Confidence will be a timely resource that can generate news coverage, while written in an evergreen way that can remain relevant after the next president is chosen. Using a fun, casual voice and interesting sidebars and anecdotes that tell stories rather than just list facts, this book will provide teachers with a supplemental resource and readers with an engaging way to better understand their government.
Just in time for the upcoming Presidential election! A must read for any new voter or current voter who needs a refresher on how this all works!
Releases May 3, 2016
3. Eureka!: 50 Scientists Who Shaped Human History by John Grant
Galileo, Einstein, Curie, Darwin, Hawking — we know the names, but how much do we really know about these people? Galileo gained notoriety from his battle with the Vatican over the question of heliocentrism, but did you know that he was also an accomplished lute player? And Darwin of course discovered the principle by which new species are formed, but his bold curiosity extended to the dinner table as well. (And how many people can say they’ve eaten an owl!) In Eureka! John Grant offers fifty vivid portraits of groundbreaking scientists, focusing not just on the ideas and breakthroughs that made them so important but also on their lives and their various… quirks.
