TV Talk: Face Off Episode 10.02 “Child’s Play” Recap & Review

This week on Face Off, host McKenzie Westmore and judge, Ve Neill met the artists at Culver Studios where quite the whimsical set up was waiting for them… giant sized toys and other peculiar objects. Oh man, this gave me some serious feels thinking about the past whimsical monsters created on this show.

For their second spotlight challenge, the artists had to work in pairs to create a wacky, larger than life character inspired by one of the objects before them. Teams were randomly assigned ahead of time…

With an odd number of artists, Melissa, last week’s winner, got to choose which team she wanted to be on. Pretty rad. She chose to work with Rob and Johnny. They went for the lollipops! Walter and Ant picked the race car. Njoroge and Jennifer chose crayons. Anna and Mel chose the watch. Robert and Yvonne chose dice. Katie and Kaleb chose a key.

In the lab, Anna and Mel were overthinking and getting in their own way. Meanwhile, Ant and Walter had trouble with their molds. In last looks, Njoroge and Jennifer were not proud of their creation. But everyone was smiling on the reveal stage when none other than Paul Reubens (Pee-wee’s Playhouse) was sitting at the judges table alongside Ve Neill, who he’s worked with plenty over the years and the other judges.

Yvonne and Robert’s dice concept was fabulous but the execution was missed ever so slightly. Too bad this isn’t a challenge where they get a second chance to fix their creation after the panel. Anyway, Ant and Walter’s race car was superb even though there was more focus on the getup than the makeup. Melissa, Johnny, and Rob made a creation that I could totally see in Candy Land – my favorite childhood board game ever. For this reason alone, it’s the winner for me this week.

I really liked the idea of Njoroge and Jennifer’s crayon but felt it could have been smoother which is ironic considering how much kids color outside of the lines. Anyway, Katie and Kaleb’s key wasn’t as impressive as I’d hope but that doesn’t mean their creation wasn’t good because it was. Just not for this challenge. It just wasn’t as whimsical as it could have been. Anna and Mel’s creation wasn’t as colorful as I wanted it to be for this challenge but what they created was still pretty fantastic.

Walter & Ant and Katie & Kaleb were safe. The judges’ top looks were Melissa, Johnny, & Rob’s lollipop, and Anna & Mel’s watch with winning team being Anna & Mel. Considering how much more whimsical the lollipop was, I was really surprised that this went to the watch. Anybody else? This week’s spotlight challenge winner was Mel. Congrats, Mel! Congrats, Mel and Anna!

The bottom looks were Njoroge & Jennifer and Yvonne & Robert with Jennifer being sent home this week. Again, it’s too early for me to feel emotional about eliminations so… wishing Jennifer all the best and… onto next week!
