Buy Indie Press is here!
Each month, #BuyIndiePress puts the spotlight on indie books from a handful of small presses and the like. All of the details are at the Buy Indie Press page. This month, I’m so excited to be putting the spotlight on Flux, Spencer Hill Press/Spencer Hill Contemporary, SOHO Teen, and Algonquin Young Readers!
Today is all about Flux!
Flux is an imprint dedicated to fiction for teens, where young adult is a point of view, not a reading level. You won’t find condescension or simplification here. You will find comedy, tragedy, ecstasy, pain, discovery – everything you’re likely to find in real life.
ISBN: 978-0738736433
The first book from Flux that I’m aware that I read was Some Quiet Place by Kelsey Sutton (@kelseyjsutton) which released July 8, 2013 immediately became one of my favorite books ever.
This book is truly one of the most magnificent pieces of work I have ever read. The main character doesn’t feel emotions and Fear, a character in this book, is on a mission to find out why. Are you ready to face Fear? That’s what you have to ask yourself before you pick up this book. Some Quiet Place is heavy. It is not for the faint of heart. This book is unconventional in every way. This book will force you to recognize and acknowledge truth in a way you have never been challenged to do so before.
You can read my review of this paranormal novel here as well as my review of its sequel, Where Silence Gathers and I highly encourage you to add these books to your “To Read” shelf on Goodreads!

My most recent Flux purchase was What Remains by Helene Dunbar (@helene_dunbar) which released May 8, 2015 (Add it to Goodreads). I read this contemporary novel over the weekend while I was recently snowed in, in one sitting. I’m not a big contemporary reader but after seeing numerous people who I adore sing their praises on Twitter about Helene Dunbar’s work, I knew I had to read this.
What Remains follows three best friends, two guys and one girl, who can read each other better than their own parents can, three besties who are there for each other for better or worse, always. But then three becomes two and watching what remains of this threesome go on… seeing the journey the two go on, the third never really being gone forever… wow. This story is about friendship and death and guilt and grieving and love. And love. It’s so wonderfully explored and crafted and beautifully written; this is one that will be on my mind for quite some time. If you love Courtney Summers, you should read Helene Dunbar.
The locker <3. I wonder if the locker was ever a contender for the cover. Anyway, I can’t say that I ever connected with or was moved but another character in the book, Ally but I can appreciate her presence which served its purposed, especially towards the end. That’s really my only criticism because everything else in this book felt so right. I loved that this is a friendship love story that follows not two friends but three and it explores the dynamic of three so well. It doesn’t shy away from anything and I really appreciated that. Long story short, for a really emotionally engaging friendship story that will leave your heart in pieces but those pieces will never go away, this is the story to pick up. And now, I must get a copy of her debut, These Gentle Wounds because I need to get my hands on all of Helene’s work asap.
Favorite Passage: People throw around phrases without thinking all the time. They say they’re having a change of heart when they’re really just changing their minds. I mean, thee are only around 2,200 transplants done in the US each year, so there aren’t a lot of people who know what it really feels like to change your heart.
