When Candace Cameron Bure recommended Love, Skip, Jump, I didn’t hesitate to find out more. I watched Shelene Bryan’s Ted Talk and went to Skip1.org immediately after. I was so moved by Shelene’s words, her transformation, and her organization, that I bought her book the very same day. I wanted to hear more of what she had to say.
Then I got distracted by the little things and didn’t get a chance to read it. Until now. God knew when I needed this book and the timing of me reading this couldn’t be any more perfect as I make strides to say “Yes” more to God. This book is about being ready, truly ready to give, to live, to thrive in God’s favor for His people. It’s about applying Acts 20:35 all throughout the year and not just on Christmas.
This book is about taking uncomfortable journeys for good. It’s about learning to listen to God and not being distracted by the surrounding noise. Seeing God as unconditional love rather than a glorified superhero. Living in unconditional love, living in Him. Seeing people as a ministry and not an obstacle. Meeting people right where they are to be a blessing.
Love, Skip, Jump follows Shelene, a very privileged white woman as she is challenged to take off the rose colored glasses and really make a change. She gives in a way that she never has before which is saying something since while really this book, it’s very clear that she can afford to give big. She jumps into the exciting waters and joins Jesus on this journey of giving. As we all should. And when she jumps, her life is transformed. As yours can be too.
My favorite line from the book is “Open hands come from an open heart.” This may seem really simple to you but for me, it’s something that I really need to continuously hear. Sometimes you need to hear something a thousand times for it to really click and continue to. Because love gives.
Love, Skip, Jump is a warm, funny, and spiritually filling book about not realizing just how rich we are, how much we can give right now, & the ripple effects that come with all of the good we do and can do when we skip ourselves and pay attention to the world around us.
Everybody can’t afford to go on multiple trips to Africa as frequently as Shelene and drop hundreds or thousands of dollars at the sight of someone’s needs but we can do something. I must say that it’s not so much about the giving as it is about the ability to open up your heart. It’s not about saving someone’s life, which I did get that vibe sometimes in the book, but it’s about knowing that your heart is open enough to taking that jump in the first place.
So if you take the heart of the message here, you will be thinking about the ways that you can open up your heart more even before you’re done reading this book. Which I think is the point of this book, so mission accomplished!
