Check out last week’s review here.
This week, host, McKenzie Westmore delivered the first individual spotlight challenge at the Normandy Casino. The challenge? Pick a card (Queen, King, Jack, or Joker) for their character and bring that character to life in an outlandish and quirky way, inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. They also had to incorporate the card’s suit (diamond, club, heart, or spade) into their makeup.
Adam chose King of Clubs. Stephanie chose King of Diamonds. Anthony chose King of Hearts. Jamie chose King of Spades and of the four, she seemed the most frazzled at first as she had to change her concept due to a gender change in her model choice as the last model left to choose from was a female and she created her idea around a male. Anthony was also freaking out on day two. On the last day, Stephanie’s model was unable to make it so as it turns out, she had more to worry about than Jamie in the end.
Julian picked Jack of Clubs. Ben picked Jack of Diamonds. Darla picked Jack of Hearts. Rob picked Jack of Spades. Logan chose Queen of Clubs. Daniel chose Queen of Diamonds. Emily chose Queen of Hearts. Kelly chose Queen of Spades. Of these, Daniel seemed the most worried at first as he didn’t really have a direction, vision for this challenge. But soon he seemed very pumped as it all clicked for him which got me very excited to see his final look. Finally, Regina picked the Joker and got a little over her head with all that she could accomplish here.
On stage? Kelly’s creation was fantastic. Yes! As was Emily’s. I loved those creations. Ben’s was awesome. Julian and Darla’s creations were great. Regina’s came together really well so I’m happy for her. Stephanie and Logan’s creations were great but I wasn’t Tim Burton impressed. There were things I liked and disliked about Jamie and Adam’s creations. I wasn’t impressed with Rob’s creation at all. It felt like a pirate and nothing else. Daniel and Anthony’s creations were a no for me as well.
This week’s guest judge was director (Maleficent) and two-time Academy Award-winning Production Designer (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland), Robert Stromberg. The judges weren’t impressed with Rob either but that had more to do with the fact that they could literally pull apart his loose makeup appliance on stage.
Kelly, Ben, Regina, Rob, Logan, Stephanie, and Adam were all safe. This left me puzzled because I thought for sure that Kelly and/or Ben were going to be in top looks this week! Still, there were others I loved so I was holding out hope for the top looks to include Emily, Julian, and Darla. It turns out, that’s exactly who the top looks were (all of which are from Team Laura!! Woot!!!) with the bottom looks being Jamie, Anthony, and Daniel.
I wanted Emily to win this week’s challenge and thought that it was fair for Daniel or Anthony, moreso Daniel to be eliminated. I was absolutely ecstatic when Emily won! Daniel was eliminated this week and he said it best when he mentioned that he had only been working on makeup for about eight months. He’s clearly very talented but has a lot to learn which will open up his vision more when hit with such out of the box challenges. And as with such a talented bunch as this that we see every season, I’m sure this won’t be the last we see of his work. What was your favorite look this week?
