I thought it would be fun to go down memory lane and reminiscence about a favorite past time of mine…reading magazine.
Photo: This is my 5th grade/6th grade room with my younger sister, Taylor on the right and her friend, Tara on the left. We never re-painted the walls when we moved into this house but I didn’t mind because I was determined to cover the walls up anyway with magazine posters. As you can see.
When I was a kid, I read Disney Magazine, which my dad, who is an artist, drew one of the covers for and Highlights Magazine, which I was subscribed to for years (and always wanted to write for one day. Hey, there’s still time, never say never!)
The pre-teen appropriate magazines that I read and loved were J-14, Popstar!, and M. I was subscribed to J-14 and even when I wasn’t for a time, bought it when I could. I, of course went through a phase when I took most of what I read in those magazines and posted them all over my walls. All four walls. Every time I got a magazine, I rearranged my walls. It was a thing. I would listen to Radio Disney or Z100 and go through magazines for hours.
As a teen, Teen People was my EVERYTHING. I still remember articles from that magazine. I loved that it was just the right balance between celebrity and real life serious issues. I loved it all. I soaked it in. I lived, ate, and breathed Teen People Magazine. Seventeen came second. Love. Always imagined being a model in Seventeen ha ha. I also read and was subscribed to Teen Vogue, YM, Cosmogirl, Elle Girl, and Teen but none of these came close to Teen People and Seventeen.
When it comes to celebrity and pop culture, my favorite magazine has always been People. I don’t subscribe anymore since People.com does the job just fine but I used to love sitting down and pouring myself over every page. I’m also not ashamed to admit that I would save certain magazines that covered celebrity weddings and baby reveals as well as many important covers covering real life issues. I had a tub full of magazines but eventually let go of this collection since I’ve moved two handfuls of time in my life and it just becomes annoying to move all of those times after awhile. I do wish I still had some of those magazines to walk down memory lane. Anyway, I also subscribed to OK Magazine for a time but after 2-3 years or so, it started to turn into all of the other gossip rags so I lost interest.
I read but never subscribed to Vibe, Rolling Stone and TV Guide. My friends always bought Vibe so I read their copies. I bought Rolling Stone depending on the celebrity on the cover and I remember looking over TV Guide after my grandma read it and have fond memories of that. I don’t quite read the magazine these days, just during conventions and big TV events/moments. The same can be said for Entertainment Weekly which I was subscribed to for a time and would love to subscribe to again to have it around the house but probably won’t do that anytime soon since I have bigger priorities money wise ha ha. Empire, Total Film, and Movie Maker I also made sure to buy during my frequent Barnes & Noble visits.
I also read and loved Time and would love to subscribe to that one day as well as National Geographic which I only really read in school but was always so fascinated by. Of course I read and was subscribed to O Magazine. I can’t wait until I have extra money on hand to subscribe to this magazine again so I can get my Oprah fix and have copies to put in the living room and/or bathroom. I sometimes flipped through Guideposts in the grocery store line and even bought a handful of copies in my day but was never a serious reader. The same can be said for Essence, Ebony, and Jet.
Another magazine that I’d loved to subscribe to… Vogue. This needs no explanation. I subscribed to or bought Glamour, Marie Claire, Lucky, Cosmopolitan, Elle, Jane, and Allure. I also bought Vanity Fair every year for the Young Hollywood issue and very rarely throughout the year depending on the celebrity on the cover.
I was subscribed to Health, Women’s Health, Self, Shape, Fitness, and Prevention magazine for a time. All of these are great but with most of these magazines pinning their articles on Pinterest, there’s not much of a need for me to subscribe.
Finally. I saved the best for last. Creative Screenwriting Magazine, Poets and Writers, and Script were great to read but the one and only magazine that I remain a subscriber to today is… you guessed it!
Writer’s Digest.
So what magazines did/ do you subscribe to? Which were your favorites?
