My favorite comedy is back for season three and the premiere was everything I wanted it to be and more! Right away, we get to see Mindy and Danny ironing out one of the kinks in the beginning of their relationship…boundaries. Danny isn’t comfortable with his sexual history with Mindy being spread around the office but Mindy copes by telling all (about everything) so you can see right away how she’s in quite a tough spot now. Danny is setting up guardrails for the relationship and Mindy must decide if she’s willing to help build the same ones. It’s a big move for these two as respect, trust, and not losing oneself along the way is key. Mindy’s willing to grow with Danny so she struggles handling the boundaries he’s set and watching that play out… it was quite hysterical of course but also very endearing.
“I can do that! I can change the very core of me.” – Mindy
I loved the line about the two having interpersonal chit chat! Ha! I loved watching Mindy try her hardest to keep her mouth shut about a skeleton – or more specifically, a thong from Danny’s past. The foreshadowing in the opening for this big revelation and later, the fun ending was great! The look on Danny’s face when Mindy confronts him about this? Perfection!
“Get your big ass in there now!” – Danny
I can’t mention that confrontation without talking about the other side too, what Danny confronts Mindy about in that very same moment. Earlier, Jeremy began to organize a charity event with Peter’s girlfriend, Lauren (guest star and The Mindy Project writer, Tracey Wigfield) but things get hot and heavy with the wrong one plus one equals two and Danny sees the start of it, sharing this piece of information with Mindy. And you see where I’m going… this is yet another opportunity for Mindy to test her relationship boundaries in the office. She may or may not fail horribly.
“That’s my girlfriend. Hilarious. I guess women can be funny!” – Peter
It was also fun getting to see Morgan’s cousin, ex-con, and murderer, Lou Tookers (guest star, Rob McElhenney) visit the office and long after Mindy who is very clearly in a relationship with Danny. The dynamic between Morgan and Lou was fantastic. I love McElhenney on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia so it was hard for me to not see this character as just Mac in another one of his schemes. But even still, it worked.
“I can’t go, I have tickets to an execution.” – Beverly
Really, everything about this episode rocked. All of the elements that helped me fall in love with this show are here. I loved the statements about men and health care as well as about assumptions on race and religion. I love how easily Mindy dismisses Morgan when words of wisdom aren’t spewing out of his mouth. I loved the Frozen and Zorro references and as always, I cannot wait for more pop culture references this season. The supply closet scene at the office was my favorite. Seriously, how many times did they shoot that because I would have laughed in every single scene and totally ruined it. I loved Tamra and the comedy she provides just by being her. Seriously, how many times can I say love in this post without it getting redundant? I don’t think it ever will here because this episode was really that good. I laughed and laughed and laughed and love every single moment. The writers, cast, and crew are starting off strong and giving us plenty to look forward to this season. This could very well end up being my favorite season yet. Only time will tell. I can’t wait.
