TV Talk: Gotham “Pilot” Advance Review

Gotham wastes no giving us a feel for the danger, the tension, the action, and corruption in this world. We jump in at the most pivotal moment of Bruce Wayne’s life and then follow the detectives on the case of his parents’ murders. Can I just say, Ben McKenzie is acing it and it’s so good to see Donal Logue and even briefly, Richard Kind in a project like this. And does Cory Michael Smith remind anyone else of Cillian Murphy?

Anyway, I love the steady introduction of characters that we know and love and hate – there was plenty familiar and just enough of the new for the Pilot. Although all of the nods might be a huge tease to some almost to the point that it might be infuriating, like OKAY, GET ON WITH IT, LET’S DO THIS. But for the most part, I enjoyed it. What do you think after you’ve seen it? Was it too much or just enough? I can only imagine how stressful that was trying to balance. My issue though… I can’t take Jada Pinkett Smith seriously as a dramatic actress, it just doesn’t work for me. So after the first scene of hers, I was fine but it just took a second to get comfortable with her in this role of all roles. But I think it works and I’m so glad it does. Also, what’s up with Ivy’s backstory? After you watch, do you like what the writers have done here?

Other than that, I am on board for Gotham, excited to see how this storytelling plays out. Hoping it doesn’t focus too much on the detectives and really plays with the world of characters at their fingertips without overwhelming us at the same time. The show has a very cinematic feel to it and I absolutely love the dark tone but there’s more that can be embraced wholeheartedly and I hope they do that sooner rather than later before it runs into the same problem that Agents of SHIELD kind of ran into.

There is the acknowledgement that romance exists between certain characters in the Pilot and even though I don’t usually care at all about this aspect, I think it’s important to make sure that this has enough depth to really humanize these characters and give this show more heart. It’s often the gateway to more heart, is it not? The characters are ready to play with. The stories are ready to be told. But if there’s one thing the show lacks the most, I’d point in this direction but it’s the Pilot and the groundwork is simply being laid out so I can give the Pilot a pass.

It’s just worth mentioning that this was exciting to watch but it was clear the entire time that there was something missing. Gotham has potential to be one of the most compelling dramas on Fox. It’s off to a solid start and is gripping all on its own but there’s so much complexity here in all of these characters so there’s really no excuse not to get where it needs to be which is MUST SEE TV. It’s on track, I think. be sure to watch tonight!

Watch the Gotham series premiere TONIGHT at 8/7c on Fox.
