Blu-ray Review: Fed Up

Release Date: September 9, 2014
Rating: PG
Running Time: 99 Minutes

Narrated by Katie Couric, FED UP blows the lid off everything we thought we knew about food and exercise, revealing a 30-year campaign by the food industry – aided by the U.S. government – to mislead and confuse the American public. Exposing the hidden truths contributing to one of the largest health epidemics in history, the film follows a group of families battling to lead healthier lives – and reveals why the conventional wisdom of “exercise and eat right” is not ringing true for millions of people struggling with diabetes, childhood obesity and other serious conditions. Including captivating interviews with the country’s leading experts, this vital information could change the way we eat forever.

Fed Up is a fascinating look inside the obese epidemic of America and is an eye opening feature on what may have started it all. Fed Up interviews President Clinton and a number of professors, authors, doctors, scientists, etc… as well as follows a handful of overweight and obese children who are actively trying to lose weight and live healthy lifestyles. Throughout their journeys and the interviews, viewers learn a ton about the food industry which it’s made clear has been a huge part of the problem, spinning the truth and bringing this nation down because of their greed. The food industry is an industry, a business, a corporation and money comes before the well being of its consumers. Naturally. Unfortunately. I knew that the food industry wants you to think that eating healthy is expensive, which is a lie, but the lengths that it goes to get this message engrained in people’s heads is astounding. Just watch the higher ups stumble over their words or simply be lost for words when confronted in this documentary. Wow. It was also very interesting to see how each generation and the media has dealt with the conflict and resolution of health and fitness over the years all the way back to the 70s.

What should we be fed up with exactly? Numerous things. The food industry. The media. This. That. But first and foremost? What we do ourselves. Take a look in your fridge and pantry and see what you can eliminate to decrease your chances of diabetes, strokes, lipid problems, etc… Now I knew the trouble with sugar before watching this documentary but I don’t think I realized just how toxic it can be when you really sit down and see how much sugar you’re consuming in just one day. Sugar (among other things) is no joke. Sugar is just as addictive as cocaine. I knew that sugar was a problem but learning that it is THE problem was a whole other discovery. There’s so much that I learned from this documentary, so much that has been confirmed here, and yes, a little bit that I couldn’t get with, for instance, one man saying that calories in-calories out is essentially useless but take the meat of this documentary and throw out the bones.

Basically, I hope that anyone struggling with not just being overweight or obese but those struggling with eating right is able to see Fed Up. Because it’s not just about being fat, it’s about being sick and taking back our health. It’s definitely insightful and worth your time.

Bonus Features:

Deleted Scenes (13 minutes) – There are five deleted scenes on the blu-ray special features with the option to play all or play individually and if you enjoyed the documentary, I’d suggest hitting “Play All” and sitting back to watch the rest!
