A stylish romantic comedy from the UK, NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING reunites Karen Gillan with filmmaker Josh McKay (Crush, We’ll Take Manhattan) and an ensemble cast including Henry Ian Cusick (Lost) and French heartthrob Stanley Weber. When debut author Jane Lockhart (Gillan) tries to follow her first success and finds herself stuck with writer’s block brought on by happiness, her publisher concocts a plan to make her miserable – and hopefully get her back to work.
Now this is one movie that probably still would have made it on my radar if even Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) weren’t in the movie. Why? It’s about a writer! A writer’s whose debut novel is a huge success and now Jane Lockhart, the author is having writer’s block as she finishes writing her sophomore novel. What makes this movie hysterical is that her publisher really goes all out to make sure that Jane is miserable so she can be in the same creative state of mind that she was in while writing and revising her first novel. Because we all know, the more depressing, the more creative. The more inspired. For many, at least. So aside from the many writerly habits that were displayed which are so true and I loved seeing… it was so much fun watching Jane get out of the slick situations her publisher put her in.
One of the subject matters that made Jane’s debut such a success was the not so great relationship she had with her father. Key word. Had. Clearly, the book itself was symbol enough to reunite these two as they worked on their relationship. I was surprised though that this relationship in particular wasn’t as in depth as I expected it to be as far as execution goes. Clearly, there’s more to this complicated relationship and I wish more of this had been explored.
There’s also an interesting relationship that Jane has with her main character who appears to her in person but of course, Jane is the only one who can see her. On a side note, if you want to see a writer’s main character really come to life, watch the movie, Ruby Sparks.
Anyway, I can’t say that I was all that moved by the relationship between Jane and her publisher once it started to get into romantic territory. That kind of dampened my ability to love this film because it could have been perfectly fine without it. As a matter of fact, what was wrong with Henry Ian Cusick’s character who was Jane’s boyfriend? I didn’t buy the breakup. I didn’t buy it. I just didn’t. No, I don’t think that Jane’s happy ending needed to be with her publisher. Boo that.
That said, I’d still recommend this film to those I know would like it. Sure, this movie may be marketed as a romantic comedy but I’d call this more of a dramedy than rom com. Especially since most people associate rom coms as light and this isn’t. It’s not dark but the pacing makes it so that its very much in between. Kind of dry but not. It takes a certain type of viewer to appreciate this kind of rom com. So, it’s probably exactly what you think it is after I’ve said that. So, if you think you want to see this, you probably do. Find it on demand and I hope you enjoy it as much or even more than I did!
Not Another Happy Ending hits cable and digital On Demand platforms today and releases on DVD in the United States January 2015.
