When Coraline steps through a door to find another house strangely similar to her own (only better), things seem marvelous.
But there’s another mother there, and another father, and they want her to stay and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.
Coraline will have to fight with all her wits and courage if she is to save herself and return to her ordinary life.
Coraline by Neil Gaiman is my first Neil Gaiman read, appropriately since it’s how I came to become familiar with his work. Sure, I’d heard his name before. Who hasn’t? It’s another thing entirely to pay attention and it wasn’t until after I saw the movie, Coraline in 2010 that I knew I had to read not just Coraline but as much as Gaiman’s work as possible. Cut to 2014. Why I waited so long to pick this book is beyond me. But I finally picked it up and what a delightful read it was.
Coraline was just as enchanting as I expected it to be. I don’t read children’s books often but what always draws me in is the freedom of imagination. The world Gaiman has created is extraordinary, the characters unusual and at the same time so empathetic in their own ways. The storytelling. Ah, don’t get me started. His voice is beautiful and that’s an understatement. Gaiman is a master with words and I knew that going in, his reputation says it all, along with the words that I have read of his on Twitter and his blog/Tumblr and in interviews. Finally being able to read Gaiman’s work for myself though was such a treat.
This is a thrilling tale about exploration, love, overcoming fears, trust, perseverance, and so much more. If you have yet to read Coraline by Neil Gaiman, I suggest you make it a point to right away. Coraline is both charming and creepy, both frightening and hopeful, everything you’re expecting and more. If you need a reminder of the importance of home and not taking what you have for granted, including the people around you and what makes you you…Coraline is waiting to take you on a journey you’ll never forget.
