BEING HUMAN is not getting any easier for four twenty-something, supernatural roommates vampire Aidan,(Sam Witwer), ghost Sally,(Meaghan Rath)and werewolves Josh (Sam Huntington) and Nora (Kristen Hager). Together, they struggle to keep their dark secrets hidden from the world, while helping each other navigate the complexities of their double lives.
Season four of Being Human premiered last Monday so what better a time to discuss season three? What makes Being Human so phenomenal is that every time you think, “How are the writers going to top this?” they go ahead and blow your mind again. I loved season one. Season two was even better. Ripped my heart out. Season three picked my heart up and then shattered it. I loved Sally, Josh, and Aidan’s journeys this season more than ever and I was beyond thrilled to see their story lines cross over so much more this season.
Even though the roommates aren’t human, life is worth fighting for, humanity is worth fighting for and watching them continue to take on that fight has made for some of the greatest television Syfy has produced. Sure, this season brings a virus along – a plague on the vampires and this season finally welcomes zombies – like you’ve never seen them before, and twists you never see coming. But what makes this show so phenomenal is how it takes the ordinary myth and makes it extraordinary. This season tackles how the past never leaves you, what it means to be in limbo, what it means to do the right thing and the sacrifices that come with it, questioning what the right thing is. Honesty, loyalty, and the will to survive are tested at every turn. God, I love this show. I really can’t say it enough.
Let’s not forget, while a one hour drama, there’s the perfect amount of comedy on this show and the tone of that comedy has really been so consistent and grounded over the seasons. I think keeping that in mind, this has also kept me from completely dismissing Nora who has been particularly frustrating to watch this season as I’m just not a fan of the decisions she has made. She means well but her execution often baffles me because she’s so two-faced, she’s quite an enigma and I love that I’m so conflicted with her because it wouldn’t be fun if I were rooting for every character so easily. Deanna Russo guest starring and playing a love interest for Aidan was a great decision. I really didn’t want Josh and Nora to be the only couple this season. Even the elements that I can’t say I was crazy about, I appreciate because they were still strong and executed so well and it shows the many different sides of this show, the depths this show is willing to go. I’m not watching the show for its likability factor, I’m watching this show to discover what it means to be human through perspectives I don’t get in everyday life and being human means running into some very interesting characters, like them or not. Being Human nailed it. This season rocked. Did I mention zombies? Finally!
Special Features:
*Behind the Scenes Featurette (Approx. 47 minutes) – This featurette starts out following Meaghan Rath, Sam Witwer, and Sam Huntington on the first day of shooting and transitions into the cast talking about their characters and stories being told this season. I loved that Meaghan Rath says that season three is the best season they’ve had because that is exactly what I was thinking. I love that the cast says that everyone gets what they want but there’s a price and I love that they get the questions that are being asked about being human through the stories being told. Just confirmation that they have the right actors playing these roles. While it comes across that they get it on screen, there’s something about hearing the actors talk about their characters evolving in their own words that really makes me smile. I love that the cast appreciates the twist on monsters this show takes and I love that the writers are so grounded in respecting the myths while making them their own. No topic is gone unnoticed in this feature. From the stunts to special effects, everything is here. What a fabulous, in depth feature.

*Comic Con 2013 Panel (Approx. 50 minutes) – If you missed the Being Human panel at San Diego Comic Con 2013, here’s your chance to watch. My only complaints with this feature are the audio quality and it didn’t edit out the part where exclusive footage is shown so while the audience is watching the (now outdated) trailer, the lights are out and you’re staring at an essentially black screen so it’s pretty awkward. Many TV shows include their Comic Con panels as bonus features on Blu-rays/DVDs nowadays and edit that part out, it really isn’t that hard to do. Aside from that, no complaints!
Appearing in This Feature:
Showrunner/Executive Producer/Writer, Anna Fricke
Cast Members, Meaghan Rath, Sam Witwer, Sam Huntington, Kristen Hager
*Bloopers (Approx. 10 minutes) – What’s fantastic about this blooper reel is that it covers essentially every single episode of the show. 8/13 episodes I believe and I think this is the only show I’ve seen go episode by episode and I wish more TV shows on Blu-ray/DVD did this. It’s awesome! The bloopers get funnier and crazier as time goes on, as the actors are in the thick of it. There’s lots of dancing. Enjoy.
*The Cast on Cliff Hangers (1 minute) – Plainly put, this feature is pointless. Meaghan Rath, Sam Witwer, and Sam Huntington tell us the cliffhangers for their characters this season and all essentially say the same thing afterwards…that they don’t know what’s coming next and anything could happen. Sorry if you wanted to hear the cast talk about their first reactions on reading the cliffhangers, what it was like shooting these cliffhangers, what the cliffhangers and their characters’ journeys up to this point mean to them. None of that is here. This feature is only one minute long but after that amazing 47 minute featurette, this one minute feature is a joke and complete waste. Pass.
