Advance TV Review: The Mindy Project Episode 2.3 ““Music Festival”

After returning from Haiti, Casey (guest star Anders Holm) has an identity crisis and thinks being a disc jockey might be his new calling. When Mindy and the office go to a music festival for their “work retreat” to see Casey perform, the substance-filled surroundings lead to a series of disasters. Meanwhile, back in New York, Jeremy hires a new doctor (guest star Adam Pally), whom Mindy doesn’t particularly like after he saves the day during an emergency delivery.

Casey has returned to America! Spoiler Alert: To say goodbye. I honestly was not a fan of the Casey character as I was hoping the (temporary long distance) engagement would lead to an extended engagement that eventually faded away. But no. Casey is back and in the picture for an in person break up. As much as I wasn’t a huge fan of Casey, the break up was kind of sad. Still, I’m hoping this is the last of Casey and Holm’s guest star role is up here. His character has been used up in a way that would be irritating for much longer. This was the perfect episode to close out this phase of Mindy’s life. Almost symbolic in a way since musical festivals seem to really happen in a certain phase of our lives (unless you’re a dedicated music fan).

So the gang sets out to a music festival where Casey has a gig. That’s right, a gig. Aside from my dislike for Casey, as if it’s this easy to switch professions and get a gig at a music festival but let’s just pretend that’s part of the joke here. Great send off with Mindy eventually rejecting someone who is more indecisive than her. Talk about relatable. No one wants to be with someone who is ten times the quality you least appreciate in yourself. I hate to get deep with a half hour comedy but so far the season has been more about soul searching than laughing. Don’t you think?

But we do get some laughs. Watching these characters in the musical festival setting is comedy gold. Morgan in particular. The cannonball! The cannonball. This moment easily makes it into the top three moments of the season guaranteed for me. Morgan scenes are the best. He delivers the comedy perfectly in every medium, whether it’s in the dialogue or physical comedy, etc… he delivers. Let’s not forget Mindy getting tossed around in the crowd though. Of course this would happen to Mindy. Of course. When The Mindy Project goes for the laughs, it exceeds my expectations. Crank it up a bit more and this season could really take off and avoid the sophomore slump.

As for the new doctor…we don’t see much of him tonight but I wouldn’t mind if Adam Pally became a series regular come season three. His character could blossom into something really special if the chemistry is right with everyone and Pally has more to offer than what we see in this episode, which he does. This could really work. What do you think?

While not my favorite episode, “Musical Festival” has its moments that remind me why I fell in love with this show in the beginning. So tune in or set your DVRs and be sure to watch!

The Mindy Project Season 2 airs Tuesdays at 9:30/8:30c on Fox.
