Each weekend, I recommend a movie, documentary, and TV series that I found through Netflix or started watching because it was conveniently on Netflix and I had been meaning to get to that movie/documentary/TV show for some time. If you have any recommendations, feel free to leave a comment!
Dodging speeding cars, crazed cabbies and eight million cranky pedestrians is all in a day’s work for Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), the best of New York’s agile and aggressive bicycle messengers. It takes a special breed to ride the fixie – super lightweight, single-gear bikes with no brakes and riders who are equal part skilled cyclists and nutcases who risk becoming a smear on the pavement every time they head into traffic. But a guy who’s used to putting his life on the line is about to get more than even he is used to when his last envelope of the day – a routine “premium rush” run – turns into a life or death chase through the streets of Manhattan. Also starring Michael Shannon, Dania Ramirez and Jamie Chung.
I didn’t get to see this movie in theaters, so I was excited when it came out on DVD. It lived up to my expectations exactly so I’d definitely recommend this be added to your queue if it hasn’t been already.
With help from almost 30 filmmakers, director Steven Rosenbaum turns the tragic events of September 11, 2001 — the memories of which are forever jarred in our psyches — into a moving portrait of emotion, loss and even kindness.
As the anniversary nears, I wanted to share a documentary with you all that really touched me when I first watched it and continues to every single time I think about this documentary and that day. Highly recommended viewing.
From the creator of “Weeds” comes a heartbreaking and hilarious new series set in a women’s prison. Piper Chapman’s wild past comes back to haunt her, resulting in her arrest and detention in a federal penitentiary. To pay her debt to society, Piper trades her comfortable New York life for an orange prison jumpsuit and finds unexpected conflict and camaraderie amidst an eccentric group of inmates.
Yes, this show is racy but it’s so much more than that. It’s dark, it’s raw, it’s everything we don’t want to face in life, in every single episode. You want to see people in tough spots, making some life or death decisions, you want some perspective, you want a wake up call, this is it. Of course, because the show is so racy, it’s definitely not for everyone but it’s also not for the faint-hearted…so. If you go in feeling uncomfortable, good. Welcome to prison. Skip over the sexy times and ignore the profanity but don’t skip out on the rest. Not to take away from the entertainment factor but it really wasn’t about that at all when I viewed this show. There’s a goldmine of story and broken characters to sift through and we’re all in there. It’s character study like you’ve never seen before. Face it and you’ll come out appreciating your life, your decisions, your inner circle, and your environment so much more than you did before.
