TV Week in Review

As the new TV season kicks its premieres into high gear, check out what I think of what’s recently aired. Stay tuned for more in depth reviews once all of the shows have premiered!

Favorite Premieres This Week
HOSTAGES – Dark. Suspenseful. Emotionally draining. Yes. Everything I wanted. Give me more!
THE BLACKLIST – I had high expectations but this show went above and beyond. So good!
FANGASM – With no set expectations for this show, I was pleasantly surprised & would call this a winner!
LUCKY 7 – The premiere reached and exceeded my expectations. I can’t wait to watch more!
The Middle – If you’re not watching this half hour comedy, you are seriously missing out!
Modern Family – What a fantastic premiere! Modern Family is back & stronger than ever!
Parks & Recreation – Hands down the sweetest premiere goes to Parks & Rec!
Grey’s Anatomy – Good start to the season but this is only the beginning so hang on!
Parenthood – Biased here as the Bravermans are back so best season premiere of the season! Ahh!
Castle – Despite my dislike for Castle practically sabotaging Beckette’s new position and job, the premiere did not fail to please!

Least Favorite Premieres This Week
The Voice – I’m just not into this show like I was before. I want to say that I’m over all singing competition shows but I can’t quite find myself tearing away from this show. I will say, I think this show has the most heart of all the singing competition shows. Perhaps that is why I’m still hanging on?

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – The premiere hit all the right marks just not hard enough. I am going to watch the entire season though because…Marvel and Joss Whedon need I say more?

MOM – I actually really enjoyed the premiere. A lot. Because I absolutely adore Anna Faris and anything she does I find hysterical. So. Biased here. The Pilot as a whole was funny as well but it could use some tweaking. I’m obviously going to keep watching and I think the writing and cast are there so I really don’t think it will take long at all for this show to really rise up among the half hour comedies.

Also Worth Watching
This week’s episodes of New Girl, The Mindy Project, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia were actually better than their season premieres! When you think about it, a Sunny episode about the gang buying a timeshare was long overdue! I also hope you’re watching Face Off, Rachael vs. Guy: Kids Cook-Off, and 19 Kids & Counting!

Skipped
Bones, Criminal Minds – I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve watched Criminal Minds live and two for Bones live. I have phases where I watch reruns on ion/TNT for weeks, sometimes months at a time and then I don’t for a couple of months. So, that’s my relationship with these shows.

The Big Bang Theory – I’m actually behind on this show! Surprise! Although when I got into this show I binge watched the first two seasons so that kind of became the way I watched future seasons. So. That’s just the way it is.

Law & Order SVU – I’m not happy to admit this but I only watch this show based on the guest stars and the story the guest star is on for. In this instance, I liked the guest star but it was difficult for me to envision him as said character for said story, so I passed on the premiere. That said, many times I’ll catch an episode as a rerun that I deliberately skipped and find myself pleasantly surprised. So perhaps one day I’ll catch this season’s premiere and be surprised.

Still Catching Up On
Person of Interest, How I Met Your Mother, Sons of Anarchy, Nashville, Haven – It will take me the longest to catch up on HIMYM but I will be caught up before the year is over!

TV Shows I’m Dropping
Brooklyn Nine-Nine did bring the laughs but aside from the star of the show, I can’t say that I’ve really connected with any of the other cast members. Plus, while the writing is there, it has potential to be much better. More in my review here. So if this show does progress, I’d be happy to start watching again. Only time will tell!

Trophy Wife was funny but not funny enough to keep me coming back each week. But I adore Malin Akerman so perhaps when I’m all caught up on TV as a whole, I wouldn’t mind marathoning this show. But for now, it’s not going to be on my list.

The Crazy Ones just didn’t do anything for me which pains me to say because I love Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar but I had a feeling something wasn’t going to add up long before the series premiered. So. Cutting this show is not surprising but still very difficult to do since I won’t be actively supporting this show with two of my favorites on it!

The Michael J. Fox Show made me laugh more than all of the comedies that I’m dropping. But the 9 o’clock hour on Thursdays is eventful enough as it is and I don’t see this being a show I actively make time to watch outside of the time it airs. Perhaps over winter hiatus I will catch up! For now, I love the guy but I’ll stick with watching Back to the Future II over and over again.
