Detective JAKE PERALTA (Andy Samberg) is a talented, but carefree police detective at Brooklyn’s 99th precinct who, along with his eclectic group of colleagues, are used to having a lax captain around the office. However, when tightly-wound Captain RAY HOLT (Andre Braugher) takes over, he is determined to make this dysfunctional group of detectives into the best precinct in Brooklyn.
Andy Samberg is a master at comedy and if you think it’s premature to say, you’ve missed out on so much of his genius over at Saturday Night Live. Samberg shines. Not to take away from the supporting cast (this role could take off Chelsea Peretti’s acting career) but it doesn’t seem like it matters who Samberg works with, he always delivers. Also great to see on the small screen… Terry Crews. He fits comedy way more than Andre Braugher does. If the writers and if Braugher loosen up his character, things could change for the better. As of right now though, his character is simply too distanced from everyone else to really connect with.
Keeping in mind that this is just the Pilot episode, there’s plenty of potential for this show beyond the set up. There’s a solid cast and the writing is there but it just needs to be taken to the next level in every sense of the word. Even with more interesting cases. Brooklyn Nine-Nine could reach that potential and have a cult following or remain where it’s at and fall flat with ratings. I can’t say that I’ll be watching this show regularly but there is plenty to root for here. Especially with Samberg in the lead. Will you be watching?
Watch the series premiere of Brooklyn Nine-Nine TONIGHT at 8:30/7:30c on Fox.
