Get Ready for YouTube’s First Ever Geek Week!

This August, YouTube is dedicating the week of the fourth to geeks! Comedy Week went so well, that YouTube is rolling out another themed week!

Produced in conjunction with geek powerhouse Nerdist, Geek Week will showcase more than 100 channels fans love, unveiling new videos, series premieres and creative collaborations – as well as highlighting some of the best geek videos and shows already on YouTube.

Each day will be hosted by a different YouTube channel:

Blockbuster Sunday will be hosted by FreddieW.
Global Geekery Monday will be hosted by YOMYOMF.
Brainiac Tuesday will be hosted by Veritasium and The Spangler Effect.
Super Wednesday will be hosted by Stan Lee’s World of Heroes.
Gaming Thursday will be hosted by Machinima and Maker Studios’ Polaris.
Fan Friday will be hosted by Geek and Sundry.

I am VERY interested in seeing what content they will present and which fandoms will be represented during Geek Week. Especially for Blockbuster Sunday. Will actual hardcore TV and movie fans be at the forefront or will this showcase people who didn’t know what Veronica Mars was until a few months ago, people who barely watch TV but they do watch Sherlock and Doctor Who (Whovian here, so no dig), and people who never tweet about movies unless there’s a blockbuster hit out that everybody is seeing.

Comedy Week was done right but Geek Week could either be executed very well or not well at all – even with the major faces of Geek at the forefront. How involved were these channels behind the scenes? I know YouTube is great about collaboration but the amount of it here can make or break the week. What determines which channels of the 100+ will be featured? I know the number of subscribers plays a part but we all know that some of our favorite TV shows and movies didn’t have the ratings/weren’t hits so it would be ironic to include only YouTubers who have say 10,000+ subscribers. There are just so many variables here when thinking about how YouTube will pull off Geek Week. I’m well aware that you can’t please everybody but does that mean they won’t try? Will they only honor the geekery that pop culture knows, cover the surface or will they actually dive in?

The idea of Geek Week is fantastic, I’m just hoping there’s room for it in that special place of my heart where Comedy Week is. I love YouTube! I love TV, film, (comic) books, sci-fi, fantasy, and the supernatural among other things so please don’t disappoint!

What do you think we’ll have to look forward to for Geek Week?
