What to Watch This Weekend: Netflix Edition #7

Each weekend, I recommend a movie, documentary, and TV series that I found through Netflix or started watching because it was conveniently on Netflix and I had been meaning to get to that movie/documentary/TV show for some time. If you have any recommendations, feel free to leave a comment!

Movie

Repo! The Genetic Opera

In the near future, a biotech company saves mankind with synthetic replacements for failed organs. But those who default on their new liver or heart are subject to repossession. Shilo (Alexa Vega) navigates this dystopia while searching for a cure for her rare illness. Her odyssey is set to a number of catchy songs in this tongue-in-cheek opera. Paris Hilton, Paul Sorvino, Anthony Head and Sarah Brightman round out the deliciously diverse cast.

Okay, so, this is a cult movie so just know that going in, there’s a large chance that this movie is not for you. Whether or not you like musicals, I think this movie tells a very dark story with very twisted characters and if you can get behind these things, you might enjoy this. This is by no means one of my favorite movie musicals…in fact I listen to the soundtrack more than I watch the movie. I have to really be in the mood to watch this movie if it’s on my screen. I’ll just say it that way. It’s an interesting movie to see at least once but don’t knock the music (even though certain people can’t really sing) because it’s awesome!

Documentary

Frontline: The Suicide Tourist

In this sobering but thought-provoking portrait of personal freedom, “Frontline” follows a native of Chicago across the Atlantic to Switzerland, where he plans to take his own life with help from a nonprofit organization that legally assists suicides. Dignitas was founded to help people die with dignity. But is it a human being’s right to end his life on his own timetable — and is it ethically sound to serve as his accomplice?

TV

Eureka

When he takes the job of sheriff of the little town of Eureka, Ore., ex-U.S. marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) discovers that the community’s quiet citizens are actually brilliant scientists working for a dangerous top-secret research facility. As he works to fix the damage caused by experimental technology gone disastrously awry, Carter keeps a watchful eye on his rebellious daughter. Jordan Hinson co-stars in this offbeat sci-fi series.

Once you get past the Pilot, you’re golden. I can’t tell you how many times I tried to watch the Pilot episode of Eureka. I am not exaggerating when I tell you it took years to watch the Pilot in its entirety. I tried to watch this show, I really wanted to like this show, and that’s why I never gave up. I knew I was missing out on something incredible, if only I could get past the Pilot. It’s not that the Pilot wasn’t good. It’s good, it’s just weird. Like, really weird. Looking back, I don’t think the Pilot does the series justice but it was a creative jumping off point, that is for sure. It set the groundwork we needed, it did its job. So…

I’ve covered a handful of Syfy events and have interviewed both Colin Ferguson and Salli Richardson-Whitfield but it wasn’t until the 2011 Syfy Press Tour, after just hanging out and having pizza with various Syfy cast members and other bloggers that I fell in love with Colin Ferguson and thought, “This dude is awesome, I have to watch his show just because this guy is so freaking down to earth and amazing and I want to support this guy, he’s freaking awesome. That’s it. When I get home I am going to finish that Pilot and watch this series.” And that’s exactly what I did. I am happy to say that Eureka is one of my favorite shows ever period. Watch this show! It’s SO GOOD! It’s great, it’s fantastic! It’s everything you want it to be and more times infinity. Oh the places they’ll take you! Watch it!!!
