Are you guys ready to find out who the five gymnasts representing the U.S. women will be? The big announcement comes July 1st! We will have our team! So let’s backtrack for a moment.
At Visa Championships, Aly Raisman and our champion, Jordyn Wieber really killed it on the floor. All around, all of the gymnasts did a good job on vault. So that leaves my favorite routines… the uneven bars and balance beam. It’s funny because a long, long time ago when I was a gymnast, I felt the most joy on the uneven bars, I got lost in them, could do them all day if they’d let me. But I felt a greater challenge on the balance beam. That’s definitely not to say that the uneven bars aren’t a challenge. I just found it easier to show my originality on the balance beam. But with that came the challenge of figuring out what to put out there and how best to do it, fear aside. So I am especially entranced when it comes to these routines, waiting to see what each gymnast will do next, waiting to see how she connects with the bars and the beam. At Visa Championships, the routines were good but you could tell that there were some nerves. But there is no room for nerves at Trials. So good luck everyone!
So who do I think will make up the U.S. women’s team? Jordyn Wieber has clearly earned her spot. Early congratulations! Of course we all want Nastia Liukin to return. But she did just enough to qualify at Visa Championships. Granted, she hasn’t exactly been training to compete like the other girls since winning the gold. She’s been busy being the face of America. So time has not been her friend but she aced this once before so clearly there’s something there. But if it’s between Liukin and Alicia Sacramone, I’d rather see Sacramone “make a comeback.” It’s her time to win the gold!
That makes two which leaves room for three more. Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney showed why they are worth being on the team. And go Maroney for showing them they made the right decision regarding the petition. I’d also really love for the world to see Sarah Finnegan’s Day One Visa Championships balance beam routine. But is that enough? If not, I’d love to see Gabby Douglas on the team. Diversity aside, she is a great talent. My only worry is that her excitement may distract her. So, we’ll see how she does at Trials. I am also behind Aly Raisman being on the team and Bridget Sloan, who is quite a ray of sunshine, much needed during such a stressful time, don’t you think? But they, like Gabby, need to really kill it at Trials so we’ll see. Rebecca Bross also really need to get rid of the nerves. Really. There’s also Anna Li, Eizabeth Price, etc.. who are fantastic! So basically, I have no idea who I want to see fill the final spot in my team but I’m sure whoever makes the team will make us proud and bring home the gold! Ahh, I cannot wait!
