DVD Review: Like Crazy

Running Time: 90 minutes

Like Crazy beautifully illustrates how your first real love is as thrilling and blissful as it is devastating. When a British college student falls for her American classmate, they embark on a passionate and life-changing journey only to be separated when she violates the terms of her visa. Like Crazy explores how a couple faces the real challenges of being together and of being apart.

Last year, there was a lot of hype over Like Crazy, the Grand Jury Prize Winner of the Sundance Film Festival. If you missed it, the film comes out today for your viewing pleasure. Now while Like Crazy is a wonderful story, beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time, I ultimately felt like as a whole, I was not as moved as I expected to be.

Going along for the ride on this journey between Jacob (Anton Yelchin) and Annie (Felicity Jones) as they meet and their relationship grows and then some… it is a ride worth taking, there is no doubt about that. Although more often than not, there were more little moments of a relationship shown than getting to actual conflict. It was a rather slow film because of that and normally, I am a sucker for detail but like reading a book, when there’s too much detail, it’s often difficult to find one’s way back to the journey at hand.

All of that said, taking this journey on the little moments make the film what it is. Everything felt natural and was consistent in tone which was beautiful to see, charming I might say. The little moments show an element of honesty that we rarely ever see on the screen and the story that is told here of love and long distance (with a visa involved and two characters who aren’t willing to make the move) is so rarely told, just like the style of storytelling is… that it all works.

Every tear shed, every moment of strain and tension, every moment of pure joy, it gets under your skin. Like Crazy will take you there. Part of the reason why is because Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin have such great chemistry and really bring this story to life. After watching, you can’t imagine any other pair portraying these characters. They will captivate your heart. Jennifer Lawrence, Finola Hughes, Alex Kingston, and others also bring just the right energy to their roles and this story and cannot go unmentioned. Now while I would not recommend this film before, say, Blue Valentine, I would say that if you are already interested in checking Like Crazy out, go for it!
