Blu-ray Review: The Three Musketeers

Release Date: March 13, 2012
Rating: PG-13
Running Time: 110 minutes

The Three Musketeers — a modern retelling of Alexander Dumas’ timeless swashbuckling classic – arrives on 3D Blu-ray™, Blu-ray and DVD March 13th from Summit Entertainment. This exciting adventure for the whole family stars Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson & the Olympians), Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean films), Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil films) and Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz (Best Supporting Actor, Inglourious Basterds).

With powerful special effects and explosive visuals, The Three Musketeers comes to life onscreen as Athos (Matthew Macfadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans), along with aspiring warrior, D’Artagnan (Lerman), embark on a dangerous and legendary mission across Europe to save both their King and country – “all for one and one for all.”

The Three Musketeers is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) and co-written by Alex Litvak (Predators).

As someone who was never truly intrigued by The Three Musketeers, I was pleasantly surprised with how captivated I was by this retelling . There are some staples in literature, film, etc… that we all just never get into. The Three Musketeers was one of those staples for me until this cast won me over. Had Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, and Logan Lerman not been attached to this film, I am positive that another retelling of The Three Musketeers would have passed me by.

What was so wonderful about this film though is that I don’t find myself depending on these three to make the film what it is. Everyone involved really carries their weight and brings forth one of the most exhilarating family action comedies of 2011. In fact, Juno Temple and Freddie Fox steal the show a number of times. Remember those names as their acting futures are very bright.

So with Twilight being Summit Entertainment’s golden child, there was very little room given to promote The Three Musketeers. My family members did not even know that another Musketeers film was being made let alone being released in theaters and now on Blu-ray/DVD. Needless to say, a family night was in order. More familiar with The Three Musketeers than I, they were able to point out how this film was modernized… and share that while at first taken aback and confused as to the relationships here and how everything would play out, this film did The Three Musketeers justice.

I found this story to be very exciting and was thrilled to go on the journeys being taken by all of the characters. One aspect that we could all agree upon regardless of how in depth our knowledge of the story were the visuals. What a visually stunning film this is! It’s so colorful while being dark at the same time, so bold, so beautiful. You’ll be captivated in the first scene by the visuals alone. No matter the level of love you have for The Three Musketeers, you will be entertained, especially if you watch with your family. So be sure to get your copy today!

Bonus Features:
Deleted & Extended Scenes
– There are about a dozen deleted and extended scenes included in the bonus features. While I personally had my fill of entertainment with the movie, it only takes fifteen minutes to watch all of the footage here. There’s no must see footage here but if you can’t get enough of The Three Musketeers than this is for you.

Cast & Crew Stories – There are four featurettes on the Blu-ray edition which altogether have a running time f approximately ten minutes. Cameras take the viewers behind the scenes as the cast and crew talk about bringing the film to life and the significance for a retelling. Because these features are so brief and there’s nothing here that will enhance your viewing pleasure of the film, I’d say you can skip these. It is pointed out that there were more real sets to shoot rather than green screens to rely on which is always wonderful to hear. Nothing is worse than being taken out of a film because the effects are horrible. The director, Paul W.S. Anderson avoids that as much as possible by giving his actors and the viewers something tangible. If I were an actor, I’d want to work with him!

Commentary – The commentary is conducted by director/producer, Paul W.S. Anderson and producers, Jeremy Bolt, and Robert Kulzer. Anderson dominates the commentary with Bolt and Kulzer chiming in from time to time, piggybacking off of Anderson’s comments. Together, these men talk about the origins of this film, acknowledging certain aspects of the literature that were never quite captured the same way on film until now, modernizing this story, and lots more. This is much more of an informational commentary rather than an entertaining, jokes left and right as they look back type of commentary. That said, it’s still worth the watch because Anderson and the producers do keep you engaged with all that they have to share. If there’s one bonus feature to check out, I would recommend this one.

* Access: The Three Musketeers – This feature allows the viewer to discover “insider information” with behind the scenes trivia, interviews, and more as you watch the film.
