In the high-octane, action-adventure Drive Angry, Nicolas Cage stars as Milton, an undead felon who breaks out of hell to avenge his murdered daughter and rescue her kidnapped baby from a band of cult-worshipping savages. Joined by tough-as-nails Piper (Amber Heard), the two set off on a rampage of redemption, all while being pursued by an enigmatic killer (William Fichtner) who has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to hell.
Nicolas Cage movies are hit or miss… and this was a huge miss. What a terrible film. This film was full of such filth and trash it was too unbearable to even finish. It felt like it tried to have that Grindhouse feel but didn’t quite get the memo that Robert & Quentin were not on board this project… and the studio still went on with the project. This type of movie is hard to pull off and unfortunately, this movie just does not make that cut. There’s no depth (to the characters or story) but instead more focus on shock value and cursing instead of actual significant dialogue. The lack of good screenwriting makes for quite a tear my eyes out adventure. But then again, how good can a script be if the only goal is vengeance and there’s nowhere to go from there? If you like violence, sex, and all of that and aren’t focused on smart story telling, this film might actually be somewhat satisfying. But honestly, I’d rather watch Crank 2 again than come within eyesight of this DVD.
This film is so ridiculously bad that it is hard to imagine that the studio did not make this just for a good laugh. But honestly, it’s not even funny how bad this film is. It’s shameful. I am ashamed of and disappointed in and embarrassed for everyone who took part in creating this hot mess… and the nerve to release it in 3D. No wonder this film did not get much promotion. It is one disturbing joke you’ll wish you never experienced. Drive Angry will make you very, very angry that you wasted almost two hours of your time watching it… so just don’t. I’m honestly too upset to even say anymore but Rope of Silicon summed it up well in their review. Although I do not give the film a D+. I give it an F. So if you were one of the few people who actually enjoyed this film and want to own it on DVD, I am more than happy to give my copy away. You know what to do.
