Young actress, Kacey Rohl started off the year strong with a role in the box office hit, Red Riding Hood. Now, she can be seen in the highly talked about mystery drama, The Killing on AMC. If you haven’t been watching, you are truly missing out. Before getting that remote, check out what she has to say about her current roles, future roles, and more!
Red Riding Hood has so many amazing elements from the medieval setting, to the murder mystery set up…what is your favorite element?
My favorite element has got to be the world we created. The sets were phenomenal, but when you see the movie you see just how huge our world is. It blew me away.
What did you learn from director, Catherine Hardwicke on the set of Red Riding Hood?
I learned that when things get stressed out and when you’re really tired, the best way to get through is to have a sense of humor about everything.
So getting to your latest project…what was the audition process like for The Killing?
I went in for my first audition with a bunch of girls. I got really into it and was pacing in the hills and crying about jerk boys from high school. I went in and did my thing and then just let it go. Then they invited me back for a session with the shows’ creator (Veena Sud) and the woman who was to direct the Pilot (Patty Jenkins, WHOA) which I was pretty nervous about. Recreating what they saw in the first audition was slightly daunting, but I got all into it again and just had faith that it would happen. They had just called three girls back in, so we all knew it was one of us. We were all really nice to each other though, which is rare in audition rooms. We were there at the same time as the guys that were called back in for Jasper and Kris, so we saw all of them, which helped actually. They all went in before us actually, and there was all of this yelling coming from the room and things being ousted around. It was awesome. Then guys came out looking super freaked! I was up first for the Sterlings, so, I went in and did my thing again. I got along really well with Patty and Veena. They are incredibly kind women. Then I left, and let it go. I thought it had gone well, but I try not to obsess over auditions. I go crazy. I found out that I had gotten it a few weeks later, and only then did I realize that it was for AMC. I was so excited.
Did you watch the Danish television series that The Killing is based on?
I didn’t watch the original before we shot the Pilot, but while we were filming the second episode, I watched the first few episodes. Mind blowing, inspiring, my jaw was on the ground. However, I didn’t want to mirror what they did on that show, I wanted to interpret our show through my nervous system, so I avoided it after that.
Your character, Sterling has self esteem issues and a lot plays into that for this traumatized teen. Can you elaborate more on this character and what challenges you faced with getting into Sterling’s mind?
Sterling does have a lot of self esteem issues, and like a lot of girls her age, she goes searching for things to fix that in all the wrong places. It was a challenge to get into simply because of how uncomfortable she is all the time. She’s complicated. I really had to take care of her while she was with me. Also, I wanted to do a good job on the show, so I had to be careful not to psych myself out. The actors I was working with really helped me with that, helped me stay in the moment. Plus, she stuck with me. Even recently, with the premiere, she came back for a day and made me rather teary. She’s a challenge that I welcome and I absolutely adore her. I just want to give her a hug and tell her that everything is going to be okay.
TV fans have seen you on a number of sci-fi shows (V, Caprica, Fringe) but how much of a sci-fi fan are you?
I don’t watch sci-fi shows religiously, but when I do, I love them. They’re so creative and the worlds that are created make me feel like I am a kid again. Plus, I find that sci-fi is a genre that can discuss current events in a more subtle way, especially political things, which I find fascinating. People who don’t vote in everyday life are suddenly worried about intergalactic elections. I dig it.
So can you tell me how the opportunity came about to take part in the mockumentary, Sunflower Hour? Did you have experience with puppets prior to this?
It was an audition like any other, though I was sure I didn’t get it. There was a girl there who was totally gothed out and I was certain she had it. It was actually Katie Findlay who plays Rosie Larsen on The Killing. We’re buddies now (laughs). It was also the first time I’d had to yell in an audition, so I was all nervous and excited about that.
The only puppet experience I had prior to filming was watching Lamb Chops and Mr. Rogers. We actually had a puppetry coach come in and teach us how to puppeteer properly, which was rad. I loved working on that show. So many laughs.
Movie fans saw you last year in the Lifetime films, Bond of Silence and The Client List. One was inspired by a true story, while the other is clearly based on real life happenings but did not have that label. Having worked on a mockumentary and also working on two Lifetime shows, it seems that you gear toward either out of this world projects or incredibly realistic projects. What other genres and subjects would you like to involve yourself in as your career goes on?
Anything and everything excluding porn, of course! (laughs). There is nothing that doesn’t fascinate me. I love a challenge.
As a Canadian actor, traveling back and forth between Canada and Los Angeles, have you considered moving to Los Angeles?
If I got a steady gig in LA or a movie, I would totally consider moving there. I love it there!
So where would you say has been your favorite place to shoot in Canada?
I’ve only shot in Vancouver and Victoria, and while the float plane ride to Victoria is fun, I love sleeping in my own bed at night.
Lastly, with parents both in the industry, are you interested in writing and/or directing?
I would love to write or direct someday. I’d probably be more likely to write though because I’m horribly indecisive and bad at asking for what I want. I should start! Thanks for reminding me!
The Killing airs Sundays at 10/9c on AMC.
