Just how fabulous do you have to be to make it big in the Big Apple? One aspiring diva is about to find out…the hard way! Ashley Tisdale shines in this totally captivating comedy.
After a talent scout spots her performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, Sharpay Evans (Tisdale) sets off for the bright lights of NYC, convinced instant fame and fortune are in the bag (designer bag, that is). But theatre’s a dog-eat-dog world, as she and Boi discover when they encounter the devious owner of a pampered pooch named “Countess” and a scheming Broadway starlet who will do anything to crush the competition. Fortunately, Sharpay also meets Peyton (Austin Butler), a handsome student filmmaker who finds Sharpay nearly as fascinating as she finds herself.
Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure takes Sharpay Evans to New York City and on the Broadway stage, but not in the way that viewers and even Sharpay could have ever anticipated. Right away, there’s a great twist revealed about Sharpay’s big Broadway audition. And with only one month to make it in the city that never sleeps, Sharpay soon finds herself working as an assistant to Broadway’s biggest star, Amber Lee Adams (Cameron Goodman) in order to give her an advantage in rehearsals. Watching Sharpay do a complete 360 in her personality was shocking to say the least. Facing the real world will do that to you. Still, it takes Sharpay quite awhile to realize that not only is Amber using her, but Countess, the dog of Sharpay’s fierce competition, Roger Elliston III (Bradley Steven Perry) is in love with her dog, Boi.
Sharpay’s larger than life personality, determination, and the integration of Broadway and a dog being the star…all of these elements reminded me of Legally Blonde the Musical which I loved. In the end, Sharpay’s debut in “A Girl’s Best Friend” is just as fabulous as she had always dreamed her Broadway debut to be. She has her new friend and NYU film student, Peyton (Austin Butler) to thank for her debut. Just when she thought that she blew her shot, Peyton came to the rescue. The chemistry between Tisdale and Butler was wonderful. Too bad there wasn’t enough time to see this friendship evolve into something more after their characters’ kiss. Though the film’s length was just long enough to keep older audiences’ attention. So while satisfied with the film, perhaps a second Sharpay film would do the relationship between Sharpay and Peyton more justice.
Director, Michael Lemback (Tooth Fairy) did do the city of New York justice, capturing it beautifully and making it pop just as bright as Sharpay. This film is actually not a musical and only has six songs in the film, which are just as catchy as the High School Musical tunes. As disappointing as it is that Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) did not make an appearance in the film, Grabeel does sing Justin Bieber’s “Baby” for the sound track. Another surprise, Ashley Tisdale was one of the executive producers of the film. This was a fabulous debut for her and I look forward to watching her take on more executive producing jobs…possibly next on her current job over at Hellcats on The CW. All in all, this film came together very well, there’s a great lesson to be learned, and it will leave both Sharpay and HSM fans quite content.
Favorite Laugh Out Loud Moment: Sharpay finds herself stuck in the closet that her bed pushes into during her first night sleeping in her studio apartment.
DVD Bonus Features:
Bloopers (1:21 minutes) – A portion of the bloopers can be seen in the video above. Viewers will catch Ashley getting distracted by the dog who plays Boi, working on the windy streets of New York City, and laughing in between takes. Ashley’s laugh is contagious, which makes for quite a fun minute’s worth of bloopers.
Austin Cam (6:59 minutes) – Actor, Austin Butler takes viewers behind the scenes and between takes of the film, putting the spotlight one Ashley, Boi, Bradley, and Countess. Austin does a great job handling his camera, and explaining to he viewers what’s going on. He’s a natural both in front and behind the camera. Too bad both of these features were so short.
Blu-ray Bonus Features:
* Bloopers
* Austin Cam
* The Evolution of Sharpay
