Host, Drew Carey and your favorites from Who’s Line Is It Anyway? are back for another exciting half hour improv experience! This time, the cast includes Bob Derkach, Jonathan Mangum, Colin Mochrie, Greg Proops, Brad Sherwood, Ryan Stiles, and special guest, Wayne Brady. Other comedians viewers will see over the first season’s 40 episode order include Heather Anne Campbell, Jeff Davis, Chip Esten, Kathy Kinney, and Sean Masterson.
Taped at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas earlier this year, these crazy comedians are taking audience participation up a notch, whether or not the audience members are sober enough to participate. This makes for one of the most incredibly awkward stage experiences to date, since the audience participant who was drunk talked throughout the sketch and ruined the entire flow of the sketch. Clearly, every live show is just as unpredictable as the last, even when bringing back popular segments from Whose Line. Plus, having just finished watching and reviewing Colin and Brad Two Man Group, the “Moving People” sketch on here didn’t exactly measure up. I’m also unsure of how much will be censored as far as the language goes, since one of the cast members says “bitch” in the first episode. Needless to say, the rest of the season is sure to be a roller coaster.
It’s unclear how many of the sketches will be new and how many will be familiar to us all, but I hope that it is a fair mix instead of what may seem to be nothing more than a Whose Line revival. It is great to see the guys going out into the audience and hand pick the participants as each of them explains the next sketch. So in this sense, the format is more open than on Whose Line. While Drew Carey is the “host” of this show, all of the comedians split the duty in telling the audience about what’s going on throughout the show. However, while more open among its cast, an aspect that is not as open yet are the number of sketches. There seem to be only 3-4 sketches per episode. I feel like there were not only more sketches but sketches that moved at a quicker pace on Whose Line, so hopefully this show can pick up the pace in order to pick up more laughs.
The Improv-a-ganza Premiere episode barely touches the surface of the comedic genius that is in every one of these comedians. While a decent introduction to the show, the first season as a whole will be much more memorable than this episode alone.
Improv-a-ganza premieres Monday, April 11, 2011 at 8pm ET/PT on GSN.
