TV Review: Archer Season 2

The hilarious spy comedy, Archer returns for its second season on FX this Thursday night and after viewing the first couple of episodes for the season, I can tell you that this season is just as fearlessly entertaining as the first!

Archer is an animated, half-hour comedy that revolves around the spy agency known as the International Secret Intelligence Service (ISIS) and the lives of its employees. Although their work of espionage, reconnaissance missions, wiretapping and undercover surveillances is daunting and enigmatic, every covert operation and global crisis are actually unmitigated occasions for the ISIS staff to undermine, sabotage and betray each other for personal gains, pleasures and prosperity.

When Archer first premiered, I initially was not interested in the show, as I am not automatically drawn to animated shows. However, I am a fan of Aisha Tyler who makes everything entertaining. So after giving the show a shot, I can tell you that Season 2 of Archer starts off with quite a bang! The characters are just as free spirited as when you last saw them. Though a team and dedicated to their jobs, each ISIS agent has their own individual agenda…and what varied agendas they are. The dialogue is so incredibly unpredictable that clever doesn’t even come close to giving the dialogue justice. It’s a bit crude, so Archer is definitely not for everyone. If you enjoyed Season One, you’ll enjoy Season Two and if you haven’t seen Season One, you can jump right into Season Two and still enjoy every moment. The stories have more depth than I anticipated and will take viewers for quite an adventure everywhere the team goes.

The first episode takes viewers to a luxury winter resort town and future episodes include watching Malory’s ridiculous schemes unfold, ninjas fighting Archer, a movie star betrayal, Archer’s favorite call girl, her baby, and lots more. Of the first seven episodes from Season 2, my favorite episode is titled, “The Double Deuce” in which Archer attempts to track down the mysterious killer of Woodhouse’s WWI friends. Archer’s reluctance in the beginning to help will make viewers laugh out loud and that is only the beginning.

Now I am personally really turned off by animated characters who don’t look like their mouths are moving completely in the way that words are truly pronounced. And this is one of those shows that doesn’t focus too much on the look of the character’s pronunciations. However, because this is such a refreshing change from the many one hour dramas that I enjoy on FX, I can still enjoy Archer for the wildly hilarious show that it is.

I have really grown to love and appreciate these wacky characters and their journeys over the course of this season and you will too. If there’s one half hour spy comedy on television worth watching, it’s definitely Archer.

Archer features the voices of H. Jon Benjamin as the highly skilled yet incredibly vain master spy “Sterling Archer”; Aisha Tyler as fellow agent provocateur “Lana Kane”; Jessica Walter as Archer’s domineering mother and the rapacious CEO of ISIS, “Malory Archer”; Chris Parnell as the easily intimidated comptroller of ISIS, “Cyril Figgis”; Judy Greer as Malory’s loquacious secretary, “Cheryl”; Amber Nash as the discordant director of human resources for ISIS, “Pam Poovey”; and George Coe as Archer’s elderly and always exploited butler, “Woodhouse.

Archer premieres Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 10/9c on FX.
