This year marks 75 years since the birth of a music icon. So during the anniversary of Elvis’s passing this past August…the biggest Elvis DVD collection released as well as Elvis’s last film, Elvis on Tour. I am still not done watching all of the footage from the collection! But longtime friend and former manager, Jerry Schilling recently took some time out to talk to Hollywood the Write Way about his involvement in Elvis on Tour and more.
Can you talk about your involvement in the film, Elvis on Tour?
I was on tour at the time that Elvis on Tour was being filmed and it really was so much fun being on tour with Elvis. At the end of the tour, I went to work for the production company, so I ended up working on post production for the film.
What is your favorite moment in the film?
I have favorite moments for certain reasons but I do particularly like the fact that he gave back so much. Also, the documentary shows what happens before he went on stage, what happens after he leaves the stage, rehearsals, and all of that. It was a very exciting time. I think though, if I had to anwser your question for one thing…it would have to be the day that we went to Elvis’ dressing room at MGM. It was the most revealing Elvis had ever been about himself and his achievements and disappointments.
This year marks 75 years since Elvis’s birth so what did you do this past January 8th and August 16th?
Of course on his birthday, I think of him but I think about him almost every day. It’s kind of a bittersweet thing, his birthday. In August, I attended the red carpet premiere for Elvis on Tour in Brussells.
How has your relationship evolved with Priscilla and the family over the years?
I’ve known the Presley family in general for 56 years, so I feel very close to the family. Priscilla and I grew up together on Graceland…Priscilla and Elvis are a big part of my memory.
You released the memoir, Me & A Guy Named Elvis, but have you considered releasing another memoir sharing even more memories from your time with Elvis?
No, I wrote the best book that I could write so there is no more that I could write. I’m not sure that I am open to more memoirs but if I did, my time working with Billy Joel or The Beach Boys would be options.
Is there any one room in your house that holds a strong memory of you and Elvis?
I think the whole house, just because of the fact that he gave me this house. It’s a great house and it’s a great piece of Elvis that I have left.
Elvis on Tour is available on DVD and Blu-ray now.
