Grey’s Anatomy Season 6 is a season of changes for every single character, whether anyone wants change or not. The aftermath of a certain main character’s death and the hospital’s new merger are just the beginning. While Season 5 wasn’t fantastic and Season 6 starts of awfully slow, this season in many ways reminds me of why I fell in love with this show. Everything is just so fresh this season. It really is amazing how much every character evolves from episode 1 to episode 24. Aside from the new employees coming to Seattle Grace thanks to the merge, every story line is just as captivating as the next. You’ll laugh and cry with everyone.
My favorite new character has to be Teddy, hands down. Although I am a huge Kim Raver fan so my judgment might be biased. The guest stars this season were also great. As far as the stories go…I actually enjoyed the few stand alone or filler episodes more than some episodes from the first half of the season. The second half of the season is really where the stakes get high for everyone. Let’s just say there is just as much, no there is definitely more focus on people’s personal lives and relationships than there is on work. (For the record…umm yeah, I’d rather be treated by the team on House.) Still, the drama is there, the comedy is there, and the Grey elements have worked well for the past 6 seasons…especially this season.
What happens in the season finale is really what stands out about this season and will no doubt shape the next. It is so intense, frightening, and moving all at the same time. The writing is taken to a whole new level in the finale. It is truly a spectacular piece of work and perhaps the best season finale in he 2009 – 2010 TV season. The extended episode of part two of the finale, “Death & All His Friends” is just over 60 minutes, approximately 20 minutes longer than aired episode and is definitely worth the watch. I won’t spoil it for you, just watch. Those who have stood by the show season after season after season will greatly appreciate what Season 6 as a whole has to offer and should definitely get this season on DVD.
Bonus Features:
Seattle Grace: On Call (4:59 minutes)- These 6 webisodes are a much lighter look into what’s going on at Joe’s Bar with the newest interns and residents of Seattle Grace. Kevin McKidd does make a musical appearance, which for me was the most entertaining part of the entire thing.
The Making of Seattle Grace: On Call (2:29 minutes) – This is a very short behind the scenes look at the cast and crew talking about working on the webisodes, while footage is shown of the cast and crew in between takes.
Chandra Wilson: Anatomy of a Talent (13:03 minutes) – Sara Ramirez shares with viewers that Chandra Wilson is the first cast member to direct an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. She has actually directed three episodes this season! It was actually 2 years after her expression of interest that she got to direct her first episode. It’s interesting facts like these that you’ll learn in this in depth look at Chandra Wilson’s directing debut. Various cast members including Patrick Dempsey, Justin Chambers, Chyler Leigh, Jessica Capshaw talk about working with Chandra as a director. They mention how she doesn’t over shoot and she’s an actor’s director. Moving on from Grey’s, the cameras follow Chandra winning the 2010 NAACP Award for Best Directing and Chandra shares her reaction to this win in an interview just for the DVD. Chandra also takes viewers backstage of the Broadway show, Chicago which she was cast in for a limited run. Her Broadway co-stars also have some kind words. This is a fabulous feature putting the spotlight on the multi-talented Chandra Wilson, one of my favorites actors on Grey’s and I’m sure yours as well.
Dissecting Grey’s Anatomy: Unaired Scenes (Aprrox. 12 minutes total) – There are 5 unaired scenes for the episode, Good Mourning and 3 unaired scenes in the episode, Goodbye. The scene that I would have liked to have aired for Good Mourning is “You Have To Tell Her.” The scenes that I would have liked to have aired for Goodbye include the emotional “I’m Not Going To Die In Your Arms” and the comedic “Come Back To Bed.” Next, there are 2 unaired scenes for the episode, Invasion which are comedic messages/cries for help. I would have loved to have seen these two scenes and the mjaority of the rest of the unaired scenes. I can understand why certain scenes were cut (doesn’t move along story line or they went a different direction) but others I assume were only because there just wasn’t enough time. This is great material! If you are a true Grey’s fan, you will definitely check these scenes out. There are 2 unaired scenes for the episode, Give Peace a Chance, 1 unaired scene each for the episodes, New History and Holidaze. I wasn’t captivated by the unaired scene for the latter. There are 2 unaired scenes each for the episodes, I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked and How Insensitive and 3 for the episode, Valentine’s Day Massacre.
In Stitches: Outtakes (2:13 minutes) – This is a short but entertaining gag reel, mainly consisting of various cast members forgetting their lines and lots of laughter! The cast and crew were incredibly long hours, so I wouldn’t expect anything else in the reel really. It’s a fun feature but there’s nothing too funny that will leave you in stitches.
Extended Scenes (2:66 minutes) – There are two scenes, “Nervous Callie” and “Sad State of Affairs” from the episode, Time Warp that are featured here. Neither scene is more or less compelling or comedic extended. It’s safe to say that I am satisfied with the way these scenes were portrayed in the aired episode.
