DVD Review – Dark Blue: The Complete First Season

With less than a month away until the season 2 premiere of TNT’s Dark Blue, it was quite fun to look back on the amazing complete first season on DVD!

Release Date: July 6, 2010
Rating: Not Rated
Running Time: 470 minutes

LAPD Lt. Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott) and his special undercover task force understand that to collar criminals, one must first get on their level. They also know that going undercover may require cutting ties with those who mean the most. Adrift, isolated and frequently faced with situations that strain the line between right and wrong, these officers know that all that matters is loyalty to each other and to the task at hand: bringing down the bad guys. From Jerry Bruckheimer Television (the CSI Trilogy, Without a Trace, Cold Case) comes another edgy and atmospheric series about dedicated law enforcers operating in the shadows and leading double lives. Omari Hardwick, Logan Marshall-Green and Nicki Aycox also star. This 4-Disc, 10-Episode Season One Collection of their edge-of-your-seat investigations will take you to the edge of darkness – and beyond.

I was pleasantly surprised with the complete first season of TNT’s Dark Blue. While my review of the Pilot episode mentioned how much more blue than dark the show seemed to be…the entire season actually is much more dark than blue. The blue only seems to come in when the characters are dwelling on their wounded personal lives and past lifestyles. While back story is important, there needs to be another source of the blue element. These core 4 characters are some of the most intriguing characters that I have seen on television in a long time, so it is very important that season 2 carefully crafts these characters into the fascinating and compelling characters I know that they are.

Aside from lacking the blue, the show is so incredibly dark that there really are no lighthearted or laughable moments. If you as a viewer can be satisfied with a straightforward and fast paced thrill, this is the show to watch. It’s gritty, it’s raw, it pushes the limit for undercover cops. The limits that are pushed by the cops make me happy to know that this is just fiction. Unfortunately, it is a fact that there are an incredible amount of drug busts in LA, which is a driving force for the cases the team gets. The danger is taken to possibly the highest level out of all of the original shows that are currently airing on TNT. So if you want to see dangerous action, Dark Blue is the show to watch.
