This season, Will meets Lisa and before you can say “Go slow, bro,” he’s in love, engaged and standing before the minister with 50 pounds of iced shrimp melting in the banquet hall. All that romance must be contagious, because Carlton finds his soul sister through online dating. (Unfortunately, that’s only half right. It’s Hilary.) And there’s a lot more than love going on as Will grapples with a big orange whale, a mobster, a bear, Jay Leno, Lisa’s cantankerous dad and in one of the series’ most memorable episodes, a bullet with his name on it. With this 3-disc set, you are cordially invited to all 25 laugh-out-loud, love-happy Season 5 Episodes of the hit, hilarious show that gave sitcoms street smarts.
The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: The Complete Fifth Season brings quite the classic sitcom entertainment that’s missing from television today. In Season 5, Will finds love, protects his family (even when he is the one hurting – i.e.”Bullets Over Bel-Air”), and finds himself in the most comical situations possible. In the first episode, Will discovers that Ashley’s talent for singing could put her in the music business, which is one of a few plots between the two siblings this season. It is so refreshing to see his cousins bring out the best in Will, the maturity in Will.
While the show is generally all about the comedy, I find the most touching moments to be when Will is being responsible because he steps up to the plate on his own. As for relationships…Nia Long guest stars as Will’s love interest for the season, and it’s quite interesting to see this relationship evolve. I feel like watching the show on DVD doesn’t do the relationship justice in terms of really connecting in the fullest because of the time line of watching it back to back vs. watching a new episode week to week for a year. This makes the season finale all the more interesting.
Anyway, Jay Leno also guest stars, though for one episode and it’s definitely not stunt casting as the story line integrated for him was written very well. There are no special features on the DVD though in an early episode, after it has ended there is quite a hilarious outtake involving Alfonso Ribeiro. Too bad there is not a blooper reel. That would have been the best blooper reel seen in quite a long time. Special features or not, if you love The Fresh Prince of Bel Air you must pick up Seasons 1-5 and set a reminder on Amazon for when Season 6 becomes available. This is the must have TV DVD collection for sitcom fans.
