Sarah Hyland Talks About Modern Family

Though I didn’t know it then, Sarah Hyland played Molly in the classic 1999 movie musical, Annie and has since performed in the Broadway production, Grey Gardens and appeared on many television shows, including One Life to Live, Lipstick Jungle (a favorite of mine), and currently, ABC’s hit comedy, Modern Family. In the new interview below, Sarah gives Hollywood the Write Way a inside feel for what goes on on the set of Modern Family…check it out:

What was your favorite part about filming in Hawaii?
It was so beautiful! I had never been to Hawaii and I brought my boyfriend with me so it was so much fun. It was so pretty. The first day we shot, there was a rainbow and under the rainbow were whales breaching behind a sailboat and it was the most surreal experience, it really was beautiful.

What can you tell us about the upcoming Hawaii episode?
Haley goes on a little adventure. She goes off with some friends and learns some lessons the hard way.

Is there a lot of room for improv?
They do allow room for that but I like to stick to the script since that’s what I’m used to. There was one day where Fred Willard was on set since he played my Grandpa. Fred, Eric Stonestreet, and Ty Burrell literally improved for 10 minutes straight and then somehow flowed right back into the scene. It was amazing and thank God I was off camera because I was laughing so much.

Who would you like to work with more on the show?
I would love to work with Sofía Vergara. She is hilarious and she is so beautiful and I just love her so much as a person. It would be so much fun to have more scenes with her, one on one.

Who would you like to see guest star on the show?
I would love to see Russell Brand or Gabourey Sidibe. She and I really clicked during the award show season so it would be so much fun to see her on the show.

What has been the most challenging scene to shoot?
I would have to say the driving scene where I had to learn for my driver’s test. It was hard because I never had to drive a car and do a scene at the same time. There was a lot of thinking on my part, so that was probably the hardest scene that I have ever had to do.

What has been your favorite moment on the set but off the screen so far?
We were filming at a night club and Sofia couldn’t remember our wardrobe person’s name, Cassandra so she kept calling her Calabasas. I think it was moreso funny like you had to be there. It was hilarious, I was dying.

As I am a huge musical fan and you were in Annie…can we expect you to do any more work in the musical world?
If a musical comes my way, I am open to doing it. I love singing, it has always been passion of mine. I won’t rule that out but I won’t be the actress that’s like, “Hey, I have an album coming out.” But if a musical opportunity comes my way, I am very open.

Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on ABC.
